It hasn’t been long since Patrick Mahomes, along with Travis Kelce joined as athletes who partly own the Alpine F1 team. Naturally curious, the Kansas City Chiefs QB decided to pay a visit to the Miami Grand Prix to watch his team on the racetrack. Amidst the racing scenes, as Mahomes was at the Hard Rock Stadium, the QB decided to throw the ball into the bleachers to a member of the Alpine F1 team.
While initially, it seemed like praises were the only reaction the QB had garnered, it soon changed with a repost of Tyreek Hill coming in. Mahomes’ deep pass caught Hill’s attention, who compared the Chiefs’ star to QB Peyton Manning, but not on a positive note. The video shared by the BWT Alpine F1 Team shows Patrick Mahomes getting ready to lob a deep ball to a person standing in the spectator area.

“Hi, I’m Patrick Mahomes, watch this!” said the QB before he threw the ball. While his pass into the stadium stands was applauded by everyone in the video, the QB’s former teammate Tyreek Hill seemed to have a difference of opinion. In a post filled with humor and taunt, the Miami Dolphins‘ speedster looked to call out the wobbly throw by replying, “Don’t be throwing ducks in our stadium 😏.”
The mind automatically draws to what exactly “throwing ducks” means in the context of football. It’s basically a weakly thrown pass that looks unaesthetic, even to an untrained eye. But this word has a history to it, and QB Peyton Manning is potentially the reason this terminology became known to the NFL world.
Back in December 2013, Richard Sherman told Sports Illustrated that “His [Peyton Manning’s] arm, however, is another story. His passes will be accurate and on time, but he throws ducks.” The loss of Manning’s arm strength was a result of years of continuous strains and a couple of surgeries he had throughout his career.
While Mahomes didn’t necessarily seem to have a similar throw, it looked like Hill was humorously calling out his former QB in a friendly banter. Alas, amidst Hill-Mahomes discussion, mind draws back to Manning and his response to the comment from Sherman.
Peyton Manning sees throwing “ducks” as a blessing
It was often heard that if a receiver catches a wobbly touchdown pass in the end zone, it probably came from Peyton Manning. That was how common association of Manning with such throws had become. But despite Sherman’s criticism, Manning is proud of this little flaw in his game. “I do throw ducks,” said the 2x Super Bowl winner.

He also added, “I’ve thrown a lot of yards and touchdowns ducks. So, I’m actually quite proud of it.” But his passes were not bad. On the contrary, the 2013 Denver Broncos ranked as one of the best passing and scoring offenses in the NFL, led efficiently by Manning.
In the 2013 season, Manning threw a record setting 55 touchdowns in a season and added 4 more as the Broncos reached the Super Bowl in that season. Hence, Hill calling out Mahomes for throwing “ducks” may also be interpreted as a good omen for the future.
