The 2024 quarterback rankings are out, and unsurprisingly, Patrick Mahomes is once again on the throne. Several league coaches, scouts, and executives were surveyed by ESPN, and the resulting rankings chose Joe Burrow and Josh Allen behind the Kansas City Chiefs MVP.
While the Cincinnati Bengals star received an overall positive opinion, the Buffalo Bills QB had one veteran executive labeling him as “overrated.” Though the third rank is nowhere in a bad spot to be in the league rankings, sports journalist Martin Weiss explained why he sides with the executive’s opinion and how the gap between 1st and 3rd spots matters.
Why Patrick Mahomes is leagues ahead of Josh Allen

When analyst Chris Broussard asked Martin Weiss if he was in agreement with Allen being termed as “overrated,” Weiss had a crisp reply, “Yeah, I am actually.” During his appearance on the OddCouple podcast, he explained, “I do think he’s overrated, and I also think he is properly ranked in this top 10.” Furthermore, the sports journalist expressed that he would prefer Lamar Jackson over the Bills QB, but it’ll be just “splitting hairs.”
“The gap between Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen is gargantuan…So Josh Allen can be ranked 3rd and still be overrated because people have him in the same conversation as Mahomes.”

When talking about Mahomes, Weiss pointed out that the three-time MVP’s performance remains not only unparalleled but also in a long lead when compared to the rest of the ranks. “I think that the gap between 1 and everybody else is about the size of the grand freaking canyon,” he said. “The gap between Patrick Mahomes and all the rest of the quarterbacks in the NFL is gargantuan.” He concluded by explaining that since the disparity between the 1st position and the rest is so huge, he finds it “ludicrous” when people compare Allen with Mahomes, which is why he finds him “overrated.”
Why is Josh Allen overrated?
The Bills signal-caller has led his team into the playoffs every season, barring his rookie year, very much like Mahomes, who’s been to playoffs every single year since becoming the starter. The two are tied at 3-3, having faced each other six times in the league. While Allen is ahead with 3-1 in the regular season, the Kansas City star takes the clear win in the playoffs with 2-0. So what are the factors that Allen lacks which led Weiss into calling him “overrated“?

In his own words, “he just makes too many mistakes.” The sports journalist praised the QB’s athletic ability, which he feels “elevates his game to a higher level,” but it is the large number of turnovers that puts him behind Mahomes significantly. The only quarterback Weiss considers a competitor to the back-to-back Super Bowl champion is the Cincinnati Bengals’ young quarterback, who holds a shiny 3-0 record against the ‘Magic’ Mahomes. “Joe Burrow’s the only guy that has stood toe-to-toe with Patrick Mahomes and came away with a little bit of silverware.”
There is no doubt that Patrick Mahomes stands tall, way ahead of all contemporary quarterbacks in the leagues, having lifted the Lombardi Trophy thrice and garnering 231 touchdowns with 63 interceptions in his seven years in the league. It will be interesting to see how he continues. He is an unrivaled streak of wins or if the likes of Burrow and Allen can halt him in his pursuit.
