Patrick Mahomes' support for Marquise Brown—Is this the true spirit of sportsmanship we need more of?

The Kansas City Chiefs preseason game met with a massive disappointment. Not only did the Duval and the Jaguars beat the Chiefs 26-13, but Patrick Mahomes’ main weapon Marquise “Hollywood” Brown came out with a serious injury and is hospitalized right now.

Mahomes threw an 11-yard pass to his receiver. However, Hollywood was injured after being aggressively tackled by Jaguars cornerback Montraic Brown after catching the ball. The receiver now has a sternoclavicular joint dislocation, and a serious collarbone injury, and is slated to miss some time in the future.

Despite the hardship, however, Marquise Brown has maintained optimism about the situation. He took to X and posted, “God makes no mistakes. The same sentiment was shared by Patrick Mahomes too as the QB retweeted Brown’s words. Now, everything relies on Xavier Worthy and Rashee Rice. The Kansas City Chiefs HC, Andy Reid made an appearance post-game and gave a much-needed clarification, though it was vague.

“I think he’ll miss some time,” Reid said. “We’ll just see where it’s at. We’re kind of going through it right now. We’ll know more later on here.” Mahomes wasn’t under a lot of duress but chose to flick the ball quickly. The QB and receiver were on the same page and so was Montraic Brown. He knew what was about to happen and was on Hollywood Brown’s tail from the get-go.

The Jaguars CB tackled Marquise Brown from behind as soon as he caught the ball. In the truest sense, Marquise Brown was caught off guard. Marquise had one receptions and 11 yards throughout the game. This might be bad news for the Kansas City Chiefs down the line because Brown is indefinitely out, we don’t know whether Rashee Rice will be allowed to play in the regular season right away and Xavier Worthy is a rookie with not a lot of experience.

Despite the uncertainty around Hollywood Brown, things are looking hopeful because things like this have happened in the past.

In week 1 of the 2019 season, Tyreek Hill suffered the exact same injury, sternoclavicular joint dislocation. It caused the Cheetah to miss four regular season games. Hill eventually returned a month later and Andy Reid expressed cautious optimism about it. Coincidentally, Hill’s injury also came in a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he suffered a chest sternum fracture.

Last year, Allen Lazard suffered a shoulder injury during a practice before the preseason games. He missed three weeks and returned in the first regular season game against the Buffalo Bills. Hence, there’s a recovery timeline of 3 weeks to a month that Marquise Brown might have to adhere to.

However, there have been cases in the past where receivers have also missed 8-9 weeks as well. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen to Marquise Brown and he bounces back with a healthy body and mind.
