Interceptions, more often than not, are game-changing plays! Particularly on the bigger stages for the league, the play holds the cruciality to it like any other happening in the game. The Kansas City Chiefs are set to face off against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium, in Las Vegas, in Super Bowl LVIII. Mahomes is eyeing to win his third Super Bowl in his seven years of NFL career. But will he get this one, amid his interceptions statistics?
In the playoffs, Patrick Mahomes has generally excelled at safeguarding the football, contributing to the Chiefs’ postseason success. However, there are notable exceptions in crucial games. Out of 17 postseason stats, he threw interceptions in four games, including multiple interceptions in three significant matchups: Super Bowl 54, Super Bowl 55, and the 2022 AFC Championship game.
The only Super Bowl appearance without an interception was last year, which also had the fewest pass attempts in his playoff career at that time. According to newscaster Harold R. Kuntz on X, “Mahomes’ Super Bowls stats are: LIV: 26/42 286 yds, 2 TDs, 2 INTs; LV: 26/49 270 yds, 2 INTs; LVII: 21/27 182 yds, 3 TDs.” This in total read to 5 TDs and 738 yards covered.

While the stats show a potential improvement in the most recent Super Bowl LVII with no interceptions, it’s essential to consider various factors like the opposing teams’ defense and Mahomes’ performance on the game day. Kuntz’s report further suggests that Mahomes is “focused/locked in” for the upcoming Super Bowl indicating optimism for improvement and potentially fewer interceptions.
However, the risks are still there considering the strong opponent this time. Despite not throwing an interception since Christmas, this season, Mahomes faces the challenge of maintaining this streak, especially against the 49ers.
As in the 2020 Super Bowl, when they met, Mahomes threw two interceptions, setting the stage for an intriguing matchup, similar scenario might potentially grace the screens on February 11th. Nevertheless, the quarterback is prepared for another shot at the trophy and continues to learn from his mistakes.
