There’s a lot that goes on in the background when you’re a 3x Super Bowl champion like Patrick Mahomes. But his winning 3 rings can be attested to people like Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford, and Tony Romo in some capacity. A common theme in these names is that Brady and Stafford have won Super Bowls, unlike Tony Romo. But Mahomes is still a huge Tony Romo/ Dallas Cowboys fan, which makes sense because he is a Texas native.
The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback went on the IMPAULSIVE podcast with Logan Paul, Mike Majlak, and surprisingly, IShowSpeed. Among many things, the QB talked about his NFL experience, his relationship with Travis Kelce, and most importantly, engaged in the GOAT talk, and how people like Brady inspire him to achieve remarkable milestones in football.

Unequivocally, Mahomes takes inspiration from Tom Brady and how he improvises and uses the pocket space to buy time and pass the ball. The Chiefs QB mentioned how Tom Brady has raised the bar high and how he wants to reach that threshold before he finally breaks Brady’s barriers.
Majlak asked Mahomes about his inspirations and said, “What quarterbacks do you take inspiration from? Like I look at Vick’s movement in the pocket, like what he was able to do in his time like, who do you look at as like a big inspiration for your game?” Unsurprisingly, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers came up in the conversation a lot.
“I looked at Tom [Brady] and his pocket movement because even though he’s not the fastest guy he moves around the pocket and gets himself in a place to throw. I watch Aaron [Rodgers] a lot and I watched Matthew Stafford a lot growing up. And then I was a big Cowboys fan so, sorry, as I grew up and so I watched Tony Romo a ton too,” said Mahomes on the podcast.
But what makes Tony Romo so special in the pocket?

According to a lot of fans and NFL analysts, Tony Romo had an unparalleled ability to make plays in the pocket, while dealing with blitzes, pressures, and even great pass rushers like TJ Watt. At some point in time, Romo mentioned how he had to be quick on his feet and make split-second decisions to avoid getting sacked or turning the ball over.
“I think the real gift of playing the quarterback position is, for me, getting through five guys in 1.3 seconds. I feel that doesn’t come across every week. For me, I think that’s probably been more my gift than the ability to make someone miss,” said Romo in a 2015 ESPN interview. Romo also added, “The ability to get through that and process information, have spatial awareness all in one second. That will separate you over time.”

This is exactly what Matt Moore, a former Chiefs QB had to say about Patrick Mahomes. Moore became attracted to Mahomes’ spatial awareness and his ability to process information quickly. In fact, Patrick Mahomes doesn’t even look at the guy after he passes him the ball, instead, he looks around to see where other players are.
“His spatial awareness is off the charts. He knows where everybody is at, at all times – with every concept, with every coverage. It’s really amazing,” said Moore of Mahomes. His spatial awareness and ability to quickly improvise is what makes Mahomes one of the most venerated QBs of this generation.
