After much anticipation and guesses about which team would emerge at the top, the Kansas City Chiefs did it. They vanquished the Miami Dolphins 21-14. The entire Deutsche Bank Park, mostly filled with fans in red jerseys, was exhilarated. After waiting for the Chiefs for 33 years, they were finally here. And it couldn’t have been a more perfect visit. They won in front of their German fans.

The key player they were rooting for was 2x SB MVP Patrick Mahomes. And to a lesser extent, Travis Kelce, especially after his rumored relationship with Taylor Swift came to light. However, in the Dolphins game, it wasn’t Mahomes or Kelce who stole the show. It wasn’t anyone from the Chiefs’ offense at all. The two shining lights of the game were two defensive players.

Trent McDuffie was in a man-to-man coverage of Dolphins star WR Tyreek Hill. And when Tua passed the ball to him, he already saw how the play would unfold. He had been diligently studying the film, and he could now predict the future. He attacked Tyreek Hill, and the ball escaped his hands, bouncing on the field in a fumble. And then, this big play shared by @JustJarmin happened. It’s probably the most extraordinary play we’ve seen from the Chiefs in years.

Safety Mike Edwards scooped up the ball on the ground. But then a redeemed Hill came and tried to take him down by the legs. And just then, he lateraled the ball backward to Bryan Cook. With the ball in Cook’s hands, he raced for the end zone. His 21.31 miles per hour run turned into a mocking gallop as he crossed the 5-yard line and… touchdown!

Cook’s 59-yard run at 21.31 miles set a franchise record. And it was his first-ever touchdown. Many people blamed Tyreek Hill for the lost points. He lost the ball in a fumble by McDuffie and then again failed to fumble Edwards. It seems the Chiefs made a wise decision in parting ways with him before the 2022 season.

Tyreek Hill’s walkout opened up doors for the Chiefs’ defense

When the Chiefs admitted to Tyreek Hill that they couldn’t pay him the $70 million he deserved, the Dolphins came calling. And Tyreek decided to jump ship. This came after he had won the Super Bowl with the Chiefs in 2019. And then the Chiefs won again in 2022. As if that wasn’t proof enough that the decision they had taken was sound, yesterday’s play should be enough.

With the Chiefs’ salary cap freed out, as they didn’t have to shell out millions to pay a wideout, they used that money to build their defense. They built the defense with depth as its foundation. Travis Kelce told the Kansas City Star, “This is the best defense I’ve ever played with.” Even Mahomes said without hesitation, “I mean, for sure.”
