Going through an injury-plagued season hasn’t made the Chiefs Super Bowl run any simpler. Instead, they are barely winning games and often rely upon their special teams to bail them out. This might have led the Chiefs to go ahead and bring in more reinforcements before the going gets tougher.
Although they managed to see off the Panthers, thanks to Patrick Mahomes’ late 33-yard run that set them up for a field goal. It was Harrison Butker’s replacement, Spencer Shrader, whose 31-yard kick propelled the Chiefs to 10-1 for the season. While Mahomes was in his usual best with 3 TDs for 269 yards, he didn’t get any help from his O-line.
On the day, Mahomes was sacked a whopping 5 times, with three of them coming in the final quarter. With obvious signs of improvement needed, the Chiefs went ahead and signed a free agent, OT DJ Humphries. However, there’s a catch. The Chiefs are yet to announce Humphries as their new signing, thereby keeping the former Pro Bowler in limbo.

While they haven’t yet announced it themselves, the #Chiefs officially signed free agent OT DJ Humphries today per the NFL’s daily personnel notice. No corresponding move was needed with the roster at 52 players since Week 10. pic.twitter.com/wV1N1fOKMs

His delay in the official announcement by the franchise does put question marks on the behind-the-scenes operations going on in Kansas City. However, Mahomes would be the one sweating right now, seeing the delay in Humphries’ announcement. He has already found himself sacked 27 times this season. But his output hasn’t dropped a bit. Going into week 13, the Chiefs QB has completed 69.8% of his passes, with an average passer rating of 93.2.
But will a left tackle who has just been medically cleared to return from an ACL injury last season help the Chiefs solve their O-line concerns? Well, there isn’t any guarantee, but Mahomes needs all the help he can get after yet another close win.

Patrick Mahomes raises concerns about the Chiefs failing to dominate games
It was yet another nail-biter for the Chiefs Kingdom as they continued to leave it late until the final moments. Winning their 12 straight games by a margin of 7 points and lower, the Chiefs aren’t a dominant force this season. Out of the 10 wins they have this season, 5 of them weren’t decided till the final play. Even Patrick Mahomes came out saying he would like to have some blowout wins, “You always want to have some blowouts. You want to be a little calmer in the fourth quarter…. I will say this more than anybody. I would love to win a game not by the very last play.”
Them committing 10 penalties for 91 yards last Sunday didn’t help their case either. Their problems at tackle just go deeper as Wanya Morris and Jawaan Taylor had yet another awful outing. Well, their poor showing in left tackle and right tackle, respectively, over the last four games has led to Mahomes getting sacked 15 times.

And those aren’t the numbers the Chiefs are expecting from their O-line. However, their head coach, Andy Reid, still wasn’t critical of Wanya Morris, who could lose his starting berth at left tackle, “I actually thought Wanya got a little bit better this week. He’s been doing that for the most part every week.” With Morris set to vacate his position as soon as the Chiefs announce DJ Humphries, Mahomes would be the happiest in Kansas City. Their improvement on that front could help the two-time Super Bowl MVP perform a little better than he has been performing already.
