Patrick Mahomes’ mama is a supportive figure behind one of the NFL’s best players. Her connection to football runs deep, but so does her love for Texas, especially Texas Tech. Randi Mahomes was born and raised in Troup, a small town in East Texas. She attended the same local school from kindergarten through high school, and her family still lives in her childhood home.

In a recent episode of Kent Hance – The Best Storyteller in Texas, the Chiefs QB’s mom shared some interesting facts about her relationship with Texas Tech and its team.

Randi Mahomes’ love for Texas Tech

She said, “I say Texas Tech is my school, and so I argue with any other Texas college team that you know wreck ’em. I love to give them a little trouble. I just like to do that.” Her comments show that she has embraced Texas Tech as her school and enjoys engaging in friendly banter with fans of other Texas college teams. This playful rivalry and her pride in Texas Tech highlight her strong connection to the school and her fun-loving personality.

Not only Randi her family was also very much associated with Texas Tech. Her father was the principal of Texas Tech. Randi was popular in her school as she excelled academically and also used to be a cheerleader in the school. 

Now she lives just outside Tyler, Texas. She invited the host of the “Got It From My Momma” podcast to her house for a chat. Randi spoke about several things during the conversation, including Patrick’s career at Texas Tech. The Chiefs QB’s journey to Texas Tech wasn’t very straightforward.

Patrick’s father had always believed in his son’s potential and sent him to a prestigious university.

Randi shared, “We went on a series of campus visits, but Texas Tech was never on the radar.” But after just one visit, Patrick was convinced that Texas Tech was the right place for him. Mamma Mahomes said, “I knew his heart and soul was there.” Patrick was making records with his passing numbers at his university. He got the No. 398 prospect rank in his batch. It also tagged him as the No. 29 pro-style QB prospect and the No. 82 player in Texas.

However, his mother had different dreams for her son and wasn’t shy about sharing her thoughts. When the coaches at Texas Tech asked Randi how she liked the school, she was honest. She told them, “I don’t think the school’s good enough. I was like my son is good. Like he is so good, no offense.”

The Mahomes family has deep roots in Texas. They visit their home state every off season, embracing the traditions and history that define their lives. For Randi Mahomes and her family, Texas is more than just a place—it’s a legacy. Randi says, “Texas will always be home,” capturing the essence of their connection to the Lone Star State and the university.
