Behind every spiral Patrick Mahomes has thrown—from 32,352 career passing yards and 245 TDs to three Lombardi trophies—is a mom who once talked her own QB off the bench. Picture Randi in the ‘90s: 20 years old, newborn Pat in her arms, clocking double shifts at a Texas country club. “We were together 24/7,” she says, laughing. “He was my little best friend.”

“Being a parent, a single mom to three kids… working two jobs, it was difficult,” Randi Mahomes confessed in a recent Instagram Q&A, her words dripping with the kind of grit that makes Kansas City’s BBQ sauce taste like victory.

Supporting his dreams while managing life solo? That’s a whole playbook of its own. As Randi puts it: “That is a big question because, being a parent, a single mom to three kids, and trying to encourage each of them differently, but supporting all and having a full-time job—and a lot of times working two jobs—it was difficult. And so it was something that I prayed constantly, for God to be there and to guide me. But at the same time, I would encourage him to stick to each thing, learn from his mistakes, and be who he is.” Fast-forward through divorce, three kids, and prayers so fervent they’d make Tim Tebow nod in respect.

This wasn’t Ted Lasso’s “Believe!” poster—it was real-life playbook stuff. She juggled PTA meetings, church Sundays (“No arguments if you go!”), and a Friday Night Lights-worthy pep talk when teenage Pat nearly hung up his cleats.

Mahomes went from almost-quit to Kingdom come

In her Instagram story, she shared on Friday, Randi recalled, “There were times that he would get a little down—even a moment in high school where he wanted to quit football.” Was that the case? She continued, Yes. He did. And I encouraged him that sitting out a season of sports and watching the games—it was not gonna be fun for him. And so he stuck to it, luckily.” Thanks to mom Randi, he chose football. But the question is, why?

Well, High school Pat was stuck at safety, doubting his arm. Dad (Pat Mahomes Sr., an MLB vet) nudged him toward baseball. But Randi called the audible. Cue junior year: QB1, 5,052 college passing yards at Texas Tech, and a Chiefs dynasty in the making. “Attitude reflects leadership, Captain,” Remember the Titans’ Coach Boone famously said. Randi’s attitude? Unshakable.

What’s your perspective on:

Would Patrick Mahomes be the same legend without his mom's relentless support and guidance?

Have an interesting take?

Here’s the shocker: Mahomes almost became a “What if?” story. Pre-draft scouts side-eyed his Air Raid college stats (93 TDs, 11,252 yards—on a 13–19 team). But Randi’s faith never wavered. Fast-forward to 2024: Pat’s breaking records faster than Travis Kelce shatters end-zone cameras. NFL’s fastest to 30K yards? Check. MVP nods? Double-check. And that 15 and the Mahomies Foundation? Pure Randi DNA—funding literacy programs, scholarships, and voter drives.

“It was something that, actually, I didn’t have to do that much because he was so determined for himself,” she adds. And when your mom’s survived “the hardest seven years” of public scrutiny (and hospice heartaches), you play like every snap is for her. Now, Randi’s rocking “Grandi” status, spoiling grandkids between KC’s parades. Because family, like football, is a team sport.

So, next time you see Mahomes’ Magic—no-look passes, Super Bowl rallies—remember the mom in the stands. The one who turned “Feeling like myself again” into a legacy. Mic drop? Nah. This is a victory lap..
