It’s week 14 of the 2024 season. The Chiefs defeated the Chargers 19-17 in the rematch as well. It was a toughly fought game. The Chiefdom was rooting for their quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, who closed it in their favor. It was unbelievable.

During the post-game conference, he looked confident after the victory and revealed, “I truly believe we are close, closer than we were (last) year at this point.“That’s a warning to their rivals. He followed it up by praising his team and added, “That’s a good football team. A good defense. We were able to have a nice drive there to get in field goal range.” That’s right, quarterback. It was their 15th straight win in a one-score game.

As expected, the game was low-scoring. Patrick Mahomes & Co. completely shut their divisional rivals by halftime as they took a 13-0 lead. But the Chargers toppled them by scoring 2 touchdowns in the 3rd half and were ahead by 14-13. They were ahead by 17-16 while 4 minutes 35 seconds remained in the game. Then the Chiefs began their drive.

It was legendary stuff. On 3rd & 10 at KC 40, the ‘Grim Reaper’ made a short pass to Xavier Worthy for 14 yards. At the two-minute warning, they were 3rd & 7 at LAC 20 when the QB passed the ball to TE Travis Kelce to gain 9 yards. At the 1:11 mark, they opted for their 2nd timeout. The Chiefs took their 3rd timeout when only 1 second left. Matthew Wright scored the field goal from the 31 yards that hit the left upright and went in. It was crazy for the spectators.

While Mahomes had 24 of 37 yards (64.8% completion rate) in 210 yards with one touchdown, the Chargers QB Justin Herbert had 21 of 30 passes (70% completion rate) in 213 yards with 1 TD. But the Chiefs locker room was jumping at the sidelines. They had expected a win, but in this fashion, it was unusual for them as well.

Chiefs owner share the franchise vision amid Patrick Mahomes dominance

The team’s focus this year is a three-peat. But the owner, Clark Hunt, is looking beyond it. While sharing his vision that they want to win trophies while keeping their roster full of resources, he said, “Our goal is to consistently compete for championships and you’ve got to be thoughtful in your roster decisions.” He then referred to their GM Brett Veach being very careful while acquiring players.

One such example was their offensive tackle DJ Humphries whom the Chiefs grabbed once the Cardinals released him after 9 seasons. That’s what Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid are doing. They are keeping a tab on their injured players and finding replacements from anywhere they can.
