The Kansas City Chiefs‘ search for the right wide receiver might finally be over! Ever since the departure of Tyreek Hill from the side, fans and analysts have felt that their key player, Patrick Mahomes, hasn’t received the support he needs from the receiving positions. Now, with the draft of Xavier Worthy, the franchise might finally rest easy for the season.
As the 28th overall pick joins the recent trade addition, Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown, it’s clear that the Chiefs aim to upgrade speed in the position. While perspectives seem divided on Worthy’s draft, one particular NFL analyst appears optimistic about the WR’s future in Kansas City.
After their back-to-back wins at the Super Bowl, the Chiefs remain under constant scrutiny, with fans and analysts analyzing their every move. A similar discourse was underway on the First Things First show about Worthy’s draft by the franchise. Chris Broussard strongly opined that playing in partnership with the league’s most popular player will elevate the rookie’s position in the league substantially.

“Patrick Mahomes throwing him the football- Mahomes gonna make this dude a superstar, well I really believe that,” said the analyst, who got a counter-view from his co-panelist, Kevin Wildes. The sports show host believes that the WR “just can’t get open,” which made Nick Wright jump to the Texas product. Wright insisted that Worthy was “highly productive every year” and said that the only season the receiver didn’t perform was “when he broke his hand.”
Mahomes himself expressed his excitement as Worthy’s draft, tweeting a running emoji and a sunglasses emoji on X. Even Taylor Swift liked the team’s Instagram post announcing the rookie’s draft! While the Chiefs Kingdom welcomes his arrival to Kansas City, some are doubting the draft choice considering one drawback factor: the WR’s small stature. Alas, the coach Andy Reid seemed content with their pick.
Why did Andy Reid draft Xavier Worthy?
The Chiefs’ 28th overall pick came as a surprise, especially since they traded up with the Bills, who have been their latest rivals in the league. So, naturally, there are many opinions that doubt the team’s decision to draft the Longhorns’ player. The biggest drawback of the rookie being talked about is his size. Worthy stands at 5’11 and 165 lb, which can be considered a disadvantage by NFL standards.

However, HC Andy Reid didn’t see it as an issue and vouched for the receiver’s speed and football IQ, which were the top selling points.”He’s not a big kid, at least, weight-wise. He’s got good height, he’s just not very heavy. But I think you’ll see this toughness that he’s got, which jumped out at me,” said Reid as per Marca. “…He [The Texas coach] kept talking about how smart he was, he’s got great football instincts, and he’s a tremendous worker. In this offense, you’ve got to be able to do that and have those characteristics.”
Worthy impressed everyone with his 4.21 timing in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, setting the record for the fastest time. Reid compared him to the other WR at that position, ‘Hollywood’ Brown, who has a timing of 4.27. The coach said, “Both of those two [Worthy and Brown] can run well. I think both love to play the game and are good football players. I think that’ll help us. It doesn’t hurt to have down-the-field speed.”

With two new major additions to their receiving room, the Chiefs hope to abolish their qualms with the position. Whether Xavier Worthy would be able to prove himself to become an eventual starter for the franchise, we would only know as the regular season commences in September.
