While the NFL vs NBA debate remained hot, Patrick Mahomes also decided to chip into the conversation. A few days earlier, the Kansas City Chiefs QB mentioned how he could see Lu Dort playing in the NFL and now, he compared himself with Point Guard Luka Doncic. Moreover, in a recent revelation, it came forth that if it weren’t for football, Mahomes would probably be a hooper.

The 3x Super Bowl champ went on the First Things First show and spoke on several topics, but his admiration for basketball became one of the highlights of the conversation. Most importantly, the QB’s dad had spoken with Chris Broussard earlier and revealed how basketball used to be Patrick Mahomes’ strong suit when he was growing up. The QB elaborated more on this question and his connection to the sport.

Broussard asked Mahomes whether he could play in the NBA if he were given a year to train, based on his high school interest in the sport. To everyone’s surprise, the QB denied any bold claims about being able to become a basketball player, based on his switch to professional football. Being a baller in his high school sophomore year was investing for Mahomes until he realized he wasn’t tall enough to make it to the big leagues.

“No, I don’t think I can play in the NBA now,” but pointing at a high school footage of him hooping, the QB said, “I think maybe if I like tried to continue to play basketball when I was young, this is my sophomore year of high school right here. I was this tall when I was in eighth grade, so I thought I was going to be a basketball player.” In the school video shown to the QB, Patrick Mahomes could be seen performing one-handed dunks and baskets, showing off his excellence as a rising athlete on the basketball court.

Replying earlier to Robert Griffin III, who had uploaded the video on X, the QB had commented humorously, I promise I was hoopin’!!! They didn’t have to put the charge on the highlights tho.” In a similar context, to further reference his height, the QB explained that he was the smallest one in his family. Mahomes explained how his brother Jackson is 6 feet 6, which came as a reality check for the quarterback and encouraged him to take up either football or baseball as a career ahead.

Further, Mahomes surprised everyone when he said that he admired Carmelo Anthony growing up as he specialized in mid-range shooting but clarified that he plays like Luka Doncic from the present lot, answering the question of which NBA player’s style he matched back in the day. Even back then Mahomes had a flair to be a leader because he played point guard for his side.

But these days, rather than entering the court as a player, the Kansas City quarterback prefers to extend his support to his team from the courtside.

Mahomes’ love for basketball continues to shine from the courtside!

Being a Texas native, Mahomes is a die-hard fan of the Dallas Mavericks, who just carved their own lane to the conference final recently after beating the Oklahoma City Thunder. We saw the QB and his wife Brittany Mahomes just chilling on the courtside watching the game. He was there to cheer for the Mavs in Game 3 when the Dallas team beat OKC with a final score of 105-101.

In the same game, the game callers revealed what the QB had to say about the NFL vs NBA conversation. Mahomes believed that Lu Dort, the OKC forward, could play linebacker in the NFL. Shortly after the QB showed love to his native team, other NFL stars like Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs of the Dallas Cowboys followed in his footsteps and were spotted in the last semifinal game against OKC.

Alas, despite his absence from professional basketball, the QB is still expected to extend his support to his favorite team while they take on the Minnesota Timberwolves, as the game stands at 41-34 in favor of the Minnesota side right now.
