Is Lamar Jackson the Achilles' heel for the Ravens against the Chiefs?

Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes are two of the NFL’s most dynamic quarterbacks, both electrifying fans with their unique play styles. Jackson, with his explosive running ability, revolutionized the Ravens’ offense and won an MVP. Mahomes, on the other hand, is a magician for the Kansas City Chiefs, known for his arm, vision, and clutch performances. When these two go head-to-head, it’s expected to be a showdown. But according to former NFL wide receiver James Jones, that matchup brings out a different story.

Ex-NFLer James Jones boldly declared, “Lamar Jackson is what’s stopping the Ravens from beating the Chiefs.” He emphasized that Jackson never brings his A-game when facing Patrick Mahomes: “We never get the best Lamar Jackson when he’s playing Patrick Mahomes.” The QB has only managed to outplay Mahomes once in their six encounters, and that’s not going to cut it for a Super Bowl contender.

“Lamar Jackson is never at his best when he’s playing Patrick Mahomes,” Jones repeated with conviction. The idea is simple: Mahomes plays his game, cool and collected, while Jackson appears to falter. Jones believes Jackson feels pressured to match Mahomes throw-for-throw, and in doing so, loses what makes him special—his dual-threat abilities. “Patrick Mahomes always makes one more pass, and Lamar Jackson can throw the ball, but he doesn’t outplay Mahomes.”

In their matchups, Jackson’s record against Mahomes is just 1-6, and that single win still wasn’t Jackson at his peak, according to Jones. He points out a critical moment from last season, when the Ravens’ defense held the Chiefs scoreless in the second half, giving Jackson the perfect chance to capitalize. But the Ravens still lost. “Lamar, you had the best record, the best defense, and you still didn’t beat Patrick,” Jones said, pointing the blame squarely at Jackson.

For the Ravens to finally get over the hump against the Chiefs, Jackson has to be the best player on the field. According to Jones, it’s not the defense, the coach, or anyone else. “He is the only one holding them back.” If Jackson doesn’t play like the MVP version of himself, the Ravens won’t dethrone the Chiefs anytime soon.
