“I feel like I’m better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ of the game.” Well, if you’re talking about NFL football that America has become accustomed to watching, there might not be any player today who could justify this comment. But Darrell Doucette, the one who made the claim, is talking about his skills in flag football. Yes, as the LA Olympics prepares to introduce the new sport, there have been lot of talks regarding NFL stars getting an instant spot on the team. But even Patrick Mahomes has supposedly ditched the quarterback position in the event and suggested another role for himself in the 2028 Olympics.

When asked if he had the desire to participate in flag football on the international stage, Mahomes said, “There’s the want to, I just don’t know if my skill set is what is required for flag football.” Then, stating that he would be in his 30s when the event arrives in LA, he added, “It’s a lot of scrambling at the QB position. It’s not just sitting there throwing.” So, we are unlikely to see Mahomes gearing up for the national flag football team as he has left that door open for some of the more athletic QBs.

However, the Chiefs star has devised a clever plan to get his hands on the gold medal anyway, “I could be a coach. You get a gold medal for being a coach? Like maybe, be like a consultant for the team.” Although he might not be a flag football savant because of how different the sport’s rules are from the NFL, Mahomes is still one of the best football players in the nation. Sure enough, the national flag football team could use his guidance and pick up some tips from his experience of winning three Super Bowls.

Darrell Doucette stood his ground on Patrick Mahomes claim

While many fans found Doucette’s claim disrespectful toward the NFL star, it’s understandable why he was so confident in his flag football skills because it is a different ball game altogether. Just like any sport, it will take new players a significant transition period to get used to the rules and tactics used in flag football. Maybe, that’s why Darrell stood his ground while also giving Mahomes his props, “I know he’s right now the best in the league, I know he’s more accurate, I know he has all these intangibles, but when it comes to flag football, I feel like I know more than him.”

Moreover, Darrell is looking out for himself and his teammates who have given the sport a lot of years and don’t want any NFL player to take their spot solely because of their star power, “I love the fact that (NFL players) want to play and that they want to come out and compete, but at the end of the day, we want the same process. We have to try out, and so do they… We don’t want to be forgotten about because we are the ones that helped this game get to where it’s at.”

With a chance to bring glory to the nation in front of the entire world, no athlete would want their spot to be taken by someone who has been playing a different sport their entire life. What are your thoughts?
