Word is on the streets. The Patrick Mahomes Chiefs are doing some sort of voodoo to stay atop the AFC mountain. But just like many other teams, the reigning Super Bowl champions have a major problem in the wide receiver department. What started with Marquise Brown trickled down to Isaiah Pacheco and Rashee Rice quickly.
Yes, Isaiah Pacheco is not a receiver. And yes, he’s back on the treadmill by some miracle. However, it seems like the Chiefs take one step forward and are forced to go 10 steps back. That analogy became clear when JuJu Smith-Schuster aggravated his hamstring. He was ruled out in the first quarter of the 49ers match.
Seems like the Kansas City Chiefs are in the market for a receiver yet again. There are rumors that it might as well be Cooper Kupp. But does Patrick Mahomes have a say in the matter? After all, he has to choose the players he passes the ball to. There are a lot of speculations going around the NFL streets. But the 3x Super Bowl winner is here to clear the air.

The quarterback spoke to Carrington Harrison on 610 Sports Radio. He asked Mahomes to address the rumors about the Chiefs signing some new receivers to the roster. The host of the show wanted to know whether Mahomes had any influence over the front office when it came to hiring a new receiver.
“They keep me in the loop on stuff they are looking at. But I don’t have a ton of influence, man. I know that regardless I don’t play guys on the field that can win football games and that’s what we have right now and if they want to add guys, they can add guys. But at the end of the day, I believe in guys that we have in the building and I think we can win a lot of football games with them,” Mahomes told Carrington Harrison.
The Kansas City Chiefs star hasn’t looked like himself though his team holds a spotless 6-0 record in the league right now. The Super Bowl rematch against the 49ers was his worst game of the season. He came out with an abysmal passer rating of 44.4 while connecting 16 of the 27 passes he threw. Though he didn’t throw a TD pass, Mahomes trucking Malik Mustapha and scoring became the highlight of the game.
The QB had to resort to making clutch plays after clutch plays and if that says anything, the Kansas City Chiefs are in dire need of an experienced receiver. That became clear when he threw a pass to Xavier Worthy in the third quarter was picked off by Deommodore Lenoir and ran it the other way.

That makes more of a case for the Chiefs to sign a veteran wideout to the roster. While the rumors of Chiefs signing Cooper Kupp are pretty strong, there will be a lot of complications in achieving the feat.
Is Cooper Kupp signing with the Kansas City Chiefs a pragmatic decision?
First off, the Rams wideout has played only two games in the season after suffering an ankle injury in the week 2 games against the Arizona Cardinals. He was listed as questionable to play against the Las Vegas Raiders in week 7 and right now, he’s nowhere to be found. Some reports suggest that he might play in the week 8 against the Minnesota Vikings, but we’ll see how that goes.
However, trade rumors about Cooper Kupp spread like wildfire. Dianna Russini of The Athletic broke the news about the Rams calling “multiple teams” in hopes of trading the Super Bowl MVP receiver. In exchange, the Rams “indicated a willingness to take on some of the ‘24 salary and are seeking a 2nd round pick.”

But here’s the problem: The receiver has a 3-year $80 million deal with the Rams. And he’ll be making a base salary of $15 million this year, while also carrying a $29.7 million cap hit. The Kansas City Chiefs cannot afford this trade because apparently, they only have about $3.64 million in cap space.
But where there’s a will, there’s a way. And that way is to restructure Patrick Mahomes’ mammoth 10-year $450 million deal. This can make room for Cooper Kupp and free up some cap space. Will they do it? Only the football Gods know. But what does the main man, Cooper Kupp have to say about all the salacious rumors?
“I’m aware of it, but at the end of the day I’m going to be where my feet are,” Kupp said, via Adam Grosbard of the OC Register. “That’s all I know. I have a job to do here. I take a lot of pride in doing everything I can for the guys in this building. And being able to step on the field knowing that I prepared the best that I can.”

Yeah, that’s just a diplomatic way of saying that he has no control over what happens to him in the upcoming weeks. The trade deadline is November 5. And both teams need to take action by that time. The Rams are 2-4 right now. Trading a veteran with 8 years of experience might not be a great idea.
