Currently, most of the credit for the success of the Kansas City Chiefs goes to Patrick Mahomes. Since his rookie game on December 31, 2017, and becoming a starter in 2018, Mahomes has proved his worth for the franchise by winning three Lombardi trophies, making six consecutive AFC Championship Game appearances, and reaching four Super Bowls.
During a press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, even Andy Reid admitted that much of his success as the Chiefs’ coach was possible because of the 28-year-old. However, have you ever thought about what would have happened if Patrick Mahomes hadn’t been drafted to the team? Well, there was a quarterback, Johnny Manziel, who had the chance to replace Mahomes and lead the Chiefs.

There is no doubt that the situation could have been far different if instead of Patrick Mahomes, QB Johnny Manziel, who played two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, was selected for the Chiefs. In a recent episode of Maxx Crosby’s podcast, Manziel revealed that he almost had Mahomes’ job. The 31-year-old expressed, “Funny story I haven’t told many people is I thought I was going to sign in Kansas City the same year that Mahomes got drafted, so I think if they wouldn’t have taken a quarterback, which thank God they did, I mean yeah I think I could have ended up there.”
He continued, “Andy Reid has a really really good long history of being able to help people and he saw something in me as well so I took a couple like meetings there and flew up to Kansas City and kicked the tires on it and it ended up not working out. But I think I had two really good opportunities and situations and you know it just wasn’t meant to be.”
During Texas Tech’s showdowns in 2016, the two quarterbacks were analyzed and compared. Louisiana Tech coach Skip Holtz praised QB Mahomes, comparing him to Manziel. Holtz expressed difficulty in finding a way to stop Mahomes, acknowledging his athleticism, strong pocket passing, and ability to create big plays. He noted Mahomes’ impact on the team and highlighted the challenge of containing him.
Manziel covered 395 yards passing and three touchdowns, with 181 yards on the ground and 3 more TDs. On the other hand, Mahomes had 1,023 yards with 12 total touchdowns in two games. Despite being hailed as a better QB than Manziel, Patrick Mahomes is still considered “not that great” as Manziel believed that there was someone much better.

Some days ago, in a recent chat on “The Shay Shay Club” podcast, host Shannon Sharpe asked Johnny Manziel about the high number of successful NFL quarterbacks from Texas, including Patrick Mahomes. Manziel expressed that football is ingrained in Texas culture, with children starting in youth leagues. He highlighted the sports’ extensive presence, contributing to the development of exceptional players.
While praising Mahomes’ high school achievements, Manziel declared Kyler Murray as the best Texas high school football player ever. He said, “If you know anything about Texas High School football, I would say Kyler Murray’s resume and what he did makes him hands down the best Texas high school football player to ever play.”
