Back in 2017, the anticipation of Patrick Mahomes ending up with the Chicago Bears was fairly high. However, the draft results had something different for the QB. Fast forward to this year, the team ended up drafting a generational talent in Caleb Williams for the quarterback position. Taking a dig at the Bears for the missed opportunity of having Mahomes in their team, Travis Kelce humorously came forth with a point to make.
To rub the salt on Caleb Williams’ team, the Chiefs star went to Big Slick KC hosted by Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, Rob Riggle, Eric Stonestreet, and David Koechner to denigrate the Chicago Bears. A couple of videos on X show Mahomes and Kelce taking shots at the Bears for what happened a couple of years ago.

Kelce and Mahomes can be seen in the panel sitting with other celebs as one of them jokingly says, “I guess you don’t get all the calls,” which compelled Travis Kelce to make the Bears’ grievances even worse. “He gets just about every call you can think of,” said Kelce and added, “Except for this one time on draft day, there was this one team that just couldn’t…”

The crowd knew what the Chiefs TE was getting at because there was a big bold Chicago Bears logo in the background for everyone to deduce. This made the whole audience erupt in laughter and loud cheer for the well-delivered line from the TE. Even Brittany Mahomes was clapping at the Chiefs duo taking a dig at the Chicago Bears for missing out on having Patrick Mahomes in their team. She shared a story on her Instagram showing Mahomes and Kelce on the stage along with the hosts.
But in this celebrity-driven event, Mahomes wasn’t the only star in the show. Rapper Tech N9ne made an appearance. People like Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things, Disney’s Austin, and Ally’s Laura Marano, and Saturday Night Live stars like James Austin Johnson reportedly also were present at the event.
The event will further hold other activities like a softball game, VIP experiences, and a Big Slick Party and Show, the proceeds from which will go to the Children’s Mercy Hospital. But coming back to football, back in 2017, the Chicago Bears made a very surprising choice and missed out on Magic Mahomes and their potential golden ticket to the Super Bowl.

Chicago Bears failed to capitalize on their selected names
Mitch Trubisky! Yes, the QB who had a dismal season with the Pittsburgh Steelers last year. His entry into the NFL was strong as he was the second overall pick in the 2017 draft class. In his rookie year, the QB had 2,193 yards, 7 touchdowns, and played 12 games in total. His second year in the NFL was his career-best with 3,223 yards and 24 touchdowns. But everything was a downward spiral after that.
It seemed like the Bears were eager to get rid of Trubisky and the QB went to Buffalo Bills after his rookie contract ended. He played 6 games with the Bills and had 43 yards to show for it. He played with the Steelers in the next two seasons and couldn’t really make an impact in both of those teams either. Now, he’s with the Buffalo Bills once again.

However, this was not the only time the Bears did not stick to their choices. We recently saw Justin Fields being traded to the Steelers after he played 3 seasons with the team. Fields had his best season in 2023 where he played 13 games and came up with 2,562 yards and 9 touchdowns. Yet, he was freed from the side. Amidst this, expectations from Caleb Williams are piling up and might end up in a similar tricky spiral. The question remains, will Caleb Williams suffer the same fate as Justin Fields and Mitch Trubisky? What do you think?
