Travis Kelce once ran the 40-yard dash impressively in just 4.61 seconds. However, this season, not only has his speed been hampered by several blockages, but the TE’s performance hasn’t been up to the expectations of the NFL fans. Furthermore, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, who achieved the all-time leader honor in receiving yards of the franchise, hasn’t been able to meet the stats expectations in any particular department.
The Chiefs are likely to head towards the playoffs this year too, with a record of 9 wins and 5 losses so far by Week 15. While their recent clashes have been an uphill battle, the loss that fumed Kelce the most was against the Philadelphia Eagles, where he vented his frustration about not playing as well as he did in the past. The football fraternity is observing an arguably underwhelming Travis Kelce this season, despite his historic records. Now, in a recent episode of his show, Pat McAfee addressed this issue along with the potential reason behind it.

In the latest episode of ‘The Pat McAfee Show,’ the host talked about Travis Kelce’s performance concerns this season. Pat McAfee and his co-hosts underlined a major factor in Kelce’s situation in every game while appreciating his performance too. All of them seemed in agreement about what caused major issues for the TE this season.
They started by addressing the variation in the statistics of the player, drawing a comparison of the current season to the previous one, “Right now, Travis Kelce sits 85 catches 924 yards, only five touchdowns. Last year 110 catches 1400 with 12 TDs, so last year nine games over 80 yards, only one game less than 30. This year already three games less than 30 yards only, then three TDs in the first four games this year, only two in the last nine plays.”
Furthermore, they played a clip from the last game of the Chiefs against the Patriots to show how defenses are strategically covering Travis Kelce in every game. The snippet showed instances where defenses use man-to-man coverage on him, with multiple defenders assigned to keep an eye on him.
Regardless of the defensive call, they make sure to account for Kelce’s movements, especially in critical areas of the field like the red zone. The clip demonstrated how defenders coordinate to cover Kelce, leaving fewer options for Patrick Mahomes to target the tight end. McAfee highlighted the challenge of defending against Kelce and the need for other offensive players to step up to beat the defense.
The former NFL punter also appreciated Kelce and said, “He is a weapon everybody knows he’s a weapon but they don’t do that to bums AJ [Hawk] they don’t do that to bums.” Although this marking might be frustrating for Kelce, the level of play he has demonstrated in the past and is maintaining this season undoubtedly instills fear in his rivals, and probably that’s why they try to cover Kelce in every possible way.

After the Week 8 loss to the Denver Broncos, Travis Kelce revealed a few insights about his game during an episode of the ‘New Heights.’ The younger Kelce brother mentioned feeling an awkwardness during the game, with a lack of urgency.
He concluded, “It’s not like what we’ve been in the past. We’ve got the best offensive mind in the game. We’ve got the best quarterback, so this is unacceptable and we all feel that way…..We’ve just got to go out there and freaking do it.”
