After orbiting around multiple teams, the ‘Passtronaut’ has finally found his new landing spot. Ahead of the upcoming season, Josh Dobbs has joined the San Francisco 49ers as a backup to Brock Purdy. The prime reason for the QB’s choice was manifold, including “QB development,” but the keyword was consistency.
Dobbs has jumped across as many NFL teams as the number of seasons he has spent in the league. After having switched between seven teams, the quarterback seeks stability and seems to have found San Francisco promising. When a player has a career that is as dynamic as Dobbs’, the question of how he manages travel and accommodation arises.

Moving around the nation can be tiring, and no one knows it better than Dobbs. The fourth-round pick was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017 and has been a part of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, and Minnesota Vikings. So it was no surprise when the quarterback expressed his wish to stick to one team for some time on the Adam Schefter podcast. Dobbs further shed light on what goes on behind the scenes of switching cities between seasons in Roger Goodell’s led league.
Dobbs shared how each team has a different policy about helping with the logistics of moving around. Mostly, a player’s rent for a fixed amount of time is covered by the franchise during a trade. The former Vikings QB shared about the time Arizona agreed to pay two months of rent when he was traded from Cleveland, and he decided to get an apartment.
“So Arizona said we’ll pay for two months rent, so pay for August rent and September rent. And I’m getting out there. I’m starting week one, so obviously, my main thought process is how can I be prepared to start Riley and all the other stuff off the field…So, I just got, like, a corporate housing apartment. ” While the QB had to leave Arizona after a year, he hopes to make his stay longer in the 49ers. But how does Dobbs fit in with the Purdy-led roster?

Dobbs had 2,920 yards, 312 completions, and 15 touchdowns in his career within the limited time he covered for the starter QB. Coming into San Fransisco, there’ll be only one expectation from him: to carry the team in case Purdy goes down. As for that, the 2017 draft’s record doesn’t look too bad.
Moreover, with his contract reportedly worth $2.25 million, the team gets to save a lot of space in their already tight salary cap space. Dobbs’ experience and reliability provide a fair bargain to the team. As for the veteran himself, the QB wanted to “get to a place that has a consistent front office, consistent coaching staff, and does a really good job of QB development, and have an opportunity to go through a full offseason in one scheme,” and it seems like he did!
The San Francisco 49ers missed out on the championship, coming really up close to the Lombardi Trophy last season. Going forward, the team is trying to fix all the loopholes in their roster.
