As shocking as it is, Bryce Young, the highly anticipated QB of the Carolina Panthers, was benched after just 18 career starts. This decision has sparked intense debate among fans and analysts, with many questioning the Panthers’ strategy to develop the young star. Why were expectations met with such unfortunate outcomes? How did a generational talent face such an uncertain future?

Despite heavy expectations, he led Alabama to a national championship and won the 2021 Heisman Trophy. However, he was closely scrutinized in his transition to professional football. Initially, fans saw only brilliance; however, that was quickly hit by inconsistency.

In the recent podcast with The Athletic, Joe Person pointed out how nothing in the franchise happens without David Tepper‘s blessing. He added about Tepper’s involvement as well, “Like they had tape from all of last season on Bryce, and that wasn’t really good.” He further expanded how the quarterback sets the tone for the team and “it was just not a good energy emanating from Bryce.”

During his first 18 starts, Young averaged a mere 195 yards per game, with a troubling touchdown-to-interception ratio of 10 to 12. He struggled to make quick decisions in critical moments, leading to a lack of offensive production that earned him a seat on the sidelines.

After he threw three interceptions against the New Orleans Saints, Young displayed frustration and disengagement. Dave Canales, the Panthers’ offensive coordinator, also expressed concerns about Young’s engagement. He noted, “When he’s not showing confidence, it can spread to the rest of the team.” The coaching staff felt Young’s struggle affecting the locker room atmosphere. While young athletes need to adapt quickly, the pressure proved challenging for Young.

As the first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Bryce Young was part of a long-term rebuilding plan for the Carolina Panthers. This benching raises significant questions about Young’s future in Carolina. With the team’s aspirations at stake, his ability to reclaim his starting role hinges on his willingness to learn.

Bryce Young’s road to redemption

The real question now is whether Young can return as the starter. Analysts suggest that his path back hinges on his ability to learn from this setback and maintain a positive mindset. Some league veterans argue that benching can serve as wake-up calls for young quarterbacks and that Young could reclaim his position. As he seeks to improve his performance on the field, he’d have to manage the psychological stresses of the game. However, if he fails to show improvement, the organization may need to potentially draft a new quarterback.

Amidst the criticism, Young’s determination to be a better player hasn’t wavered. “I believe in my ability to lead and adapt,” he remarked after benching. His resilience and willingness to learn will be key elements as he returns to practice.

Overall, this situation marks a crucial turning point for Young and the Panthers. If he cannot demonstrate growth, it could signal the beginning of the end for his time in Carolina. As the Panthers consider their options for the remainder of the season, all eyes will be on Young. Will they continue to develop him or consider bringing in a veteran presence to guide him?
