Did Jerry Jones just make the worst trade decision in Cowboys' history with Jonathan Mingo?

Heading into week 10, the Cowboys are standing on thin ice, having lost five of their first 8 games this season. And after their latest defeat to the Falcons on Sunday. Jerry Jones did talk about the Cowboys getting a few trade deals done before the deadline on Tuesday. However, when the fans were expecting something special from their GM, Jones brought them WR Jonathan Mingo from Carolina.

Yes, out of all the players, Jones could have traded for his eyes laid on Mingo. Selected as a second-round pick last year, Mingo started 14 of his team’s 15 games as a rookie. And to finish his debut season in the NFL, Mingo racked up 43 catches for 418 yards on 85 targets. But he didn’t manage to score a single TD out of all those receptions. Going into his sophomore year, Mingo has only 12 catches for 121 yards and is yet to score a TD in the NFL.

So what did the Panthers get in return for sending a receiver with no TDs to Dallas? A 2025 fourth-round pick that has got the fans claiming, “The Panthers flat out robbed the Cowboys. Dallas is the most embarrassing franchise in the NFL.” Well, this trade paints a bleak picture of the Cowboys as a dominant franchise given the trades elsewhere.

Take, for instance, the Chiefs bringing a 5 time Pro Bowler receiver, DeAndre Hopkins, for peanuts. They only sent out a conditional 2025 fifth-round pick that could turn into a fourth-round if certain conditions are met. You could even look at the Cowboys trading away their receiver, Amari Cooper, in 2022. In order to get him out of their books, the Cowboys got a 2022 fifth-rounder and a sixth-rounder.

Fans looking at all of those trades and comparing them with Mingo’s only puts more pressure on Jones this season. Some of them have already started to retaliate against their GM with calls of him getting fired.

Have an interesting take?

Now that Jones has traded away next year’s fourth-round pick to the Panthers. They wouldn’t be able to showcase their magic on that round. Over the years, the Cowboys have drafted players like QB Dak Prescott, LB Anthony Hitchens, DL Dorance Armstrong and TE Jake Ferguson. With Mingo being added to the Cowboys roster, there wouldn’t be chances of special players coming out from fourth-round picks next year.

Out of 126 players with 75 targets or more over the last two seasons, Mingo ranks 126th in the NFL success rate. Well, seeing those numbers, the Editor-in-Chief of the Dallas Cowboys, RJ Ochoa, expressed, “Hey, wow, this is gross.” And that wasn’t the only reaction the Cowboys got after Mingo’s trade was confirmed. As fans called for Jerry Jones’ exit, “Well done Jerry Jones, you have proved my point how the Cowboys, as long as you are still in charge, this team will never go beyond a first-round exit from the NFL Playoffs. Trading for a wr, who has done nothing all season long? Yea! Congratulations going all in, Imao.”

One of them even defended head coach Mike McCarthy and instead put the blame on Jones, “I would trade Jerry Jones, he needs to go. It’s not McCarthy, its Jerry Jones that needs to just let go of his control.” Meanwhile, another fan summed up Jones time as a general manager, “Jerry Jones gave up a 4th round pick for Jonathan Mingo, who hasn’t done anything in the NFL. Jerry is the worst general manager in the NFL.”

Looking at all those reactions, it doesn’t seem like the Cowboys nation would forgive Jones for his decision on Mingo’s trade. The only way they would appreciate this trade is by watching Mingo hit the ground running from his possible debut next week.
