Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have made a habit of proving doubters wrong. No Tyreek Hill? No problem. A midseason slump? Watch them go on a run. But this offseason, even they weren’t immune to the brutal realities of the business. The defending champs had tough decisions to make, and that meant letting go of key pieces. But one move, in particular, is already making waves.
It’s an insane move. Everyone knew that the new league year would bring some insane signings. But can you believe one of the Chiefs has gone to the Eagles? Yes, that’s right. This signing has created a massive buzz, leading to both a lot of hate and love. After all, the player has gone from having a front-row seat to the Pat Mahomes show to getting one to the Jalen Hurts show. Oh, boy! This only exacerbates the spicy rivalry bubbling between the franchises.
Well, everyone praised Andy Reid for building a defense that led the squad to the Super Bowl. They had fantastic players, one of whom was Joshua Uche. The LB gave his all to the squad, therefore it was shocking when they opted not to extend his contract. While they hesitated, the Eagles swooped in. As a result, Philly’s defense has received a significant Uche upgrade. The LB has signed with the Phillies and will swap red for green on the field in 2025.

Reporter Adam Schefter revealed all this, “Pass-rush help for Philadelphia: Eagles reached agreement today on a one-year deal with former Chiefs free-agent LB Joshua Uche, who now will try to help replace Josh Sweat and Brandon Graham. Deal negotiated by Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln.” With this trade, the Eagles have guaranteed that their defense will receive an extra layer of protection. The team has already given Zack Baun a big contract extension, and Joshua Uche is someone who can sync with him well.
The Chiefs may have taken a significant hit now that they don’t even have the choice to rethink Uche’s release. The squad may now consider adding a new LB to strengthen their defense. But that is not going to be easy. After all, everyone knows that Andy Reid normally takes his time when it comes to signing defensive players. And a great example for this would be their recently signed CB, Kristian Fulton.

If the rumors are true, some players have already made Reid’s cut. These may be Bobby Wagner, Lavonte David, Eric Kendricks, and Elandon Roberts. The Chiefs currently have plenty of cap space to sign any of them. After all, they did play with the numbers a lot to give them some cap comfort.
What’s your perspective on:
Did the Chiefs make a huge mistake letting Joshua Uche join their rivals, the Eagles?

The Chiefs pre-planned rework of Patrick Mahomes’ contract might work
When a team lacks cap space, their big players come into consideration straight away. And the same happened to Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones. Both players had hefty contracts, which the Chiefs adjusted to clear up room for 2025. Everyone is aware that Mahomes has signed a $450 million contract until 2031, while Jones has signed a five-year agreement worth $158.8 million in 2024. Both of these contracts were modified to give the team about $50.5 million in cap room to work with this offseason.

And, while these were only two adjustments, their gargantuan values have made it much easier for the Chiefs to sign players. Within two days of the start of the new league year, the team has signed four major free agents. Jaylon Moore, Kristian Fulton, Elijah Mitchell, and James Winchester, worth $55.15 million in total. At $30.15 million in 2025 cap, they are like a jackpot for Kansas City. Not only that, but after these deals, the team still has almost $5 million in cap space available for the NFL draft. Talk about planning!
These decisions have made the Chiefs’ path to a revenge tour much easier. Looking at their existing roster, we can even presume that the team is entering the NFL Draft to acquire an LB or an OT. And after fixing them, maybe the team would be done with the changes for the 2025 season. Time to prove their dynasty credentials all over again!
