Christian McCaffrey’s journey this season has been marred by Achilles tendinitis, which began troubling him in early August. The injury kept him out of most of training camp, and despite returning briefly before the season opener, McCaffrey was a last-minute scratch against the New York Jets. Another setback occurred shortly after, leading to his placement on injured reserve in mid-September.

49ers President of Football Operations and GM, John Lynch, gave an optimistic update on McCaffrey’s injury status ahead of their Week 10 matchup against the Buccaneers. “What we know is that he practiced Monday in a bonus practice. Showed up Tuesday feeling good,” Lynch said. “He practised Wednesday & Thursday kind of a normal fashion…and looked great.”

Since then, McCaffrey has spent seven weeks rehabilitating, including traveling to Germany for specialized treatment. The GM Lynch also added, “I say hopeful that he will be out there with us…I think that’s all good news for us.”

Now, after being designated for return from injured reserve, McCaffrey has been practicing without setbacks. Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed, “He’s been awesome these last two days,” and expects him to play Sunday against the Buccaneers.

Shanahan is optimistic after seeing the running back on the practice field. The coach acknowledged the unpredictability of injury recovery but remained upbeat: “You never know (about) a setback or anything, but these two days have been great, and I expect to see him out there.”

McCaffrey’s return couldn’t come at a better time for the 4-4 49ers, who have struggled without their star player. Shanahan’s prediction brings a sigh of relief for both the team and fans, as McCaffrey’s presence is a game-changer. Shanahan and quarterback Brock Purdy both expressed excitement over his return, with Purdy adding, “It’s been awesome. Just what he brings to the table really fires everybody else up around.” The 49ers are hopeful that McCaffrey’s return will help them get back on track against the Buccaneers.
