In 2017, many pro football players brought up the topic of safety regarding concussions and injuries in the league. However, at that time, an orthopedic surgeon, Dr Michael Behr, said, “Regardless of how safe we make it, it’s still a dangerous sport.” And it is evident through the seasons, as this season has reported around 986 injuries on the gridiron.

In 2022, the league saw around 204 injuries in total. Although it was lower than 2021’s 387 injuries, the concussion injury rate was up by 23 more injuries than 2021. But the number from this year has crossed a huge bar, bringing the fear of physical scares to the surface more than ever.

As per the NFL report, this 2023 NFL season saw around 986 injuries in total. However, there is still a regular game left, therefore, this data might increase by the end of Week 18. When we talk about the injuries per week, the NFL lists the total number of players injured every week. The list goes as:

Week 1 – 22
Week 2 – 36
Week 3 – 51
Week 4 – 63
Week 5 – 54
Week 6 – 67
Week 7 – 52
Week 8 – 47
Week 9 – 55
Week 10 – 54
Week 11 – 54
Week 12 – 50
Week 13 – 38
Week 14 – 51
Week 15 – 63
Week 16 – 81
Week 17 – 71
Week 18 – 77

These numbers of injuries per week tell how dangerous the play has been. Despite efforts to improve health and safety measures, players still face the risk of various injuries such as stringers, knee/ankle injuries, concussions, and ACL or MCL tears. Injuries like torn ACL and MCL often demand surgery, generally leading affected players to miss the rest of their season.

Concussions, on the other hand, despite not taking much longer than a week or two in some general cases, hurts the players. These injuries with their harmful impacts can result in anxiety, depression, or sometimes cognitive impairment for players. This season even saw injuries to eminent players like Tyreek Hill, Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson, Travis Kelce, and Patrick Mahomes.

Now, as the final game of the regular season is left, in total 77 players are dealing with injuries before their Week 18 game.
