Mike Evans is close to scripting history. Besides having the fortune of playing alongside Tom Brady in 2022 and lifting the Lombardi Trophy, Evans also has been inching closer and closer to breaking Jerry Rice’s 27-year-old record. While the Tampa Bay Buccanneers are in a lurch as they currently have a losing record of 4-6, and are 3rd in the NFC North division, matters look to be going at ease for Evans personally

The football player entered Sunday Night Football’s game against the San Francisco 49ers with 737 yards on 43 catches, and he is poised to take a big step toward creating history. Will he be able to achieve the honor?

Mike Evans is already up there in the record books of the NFL with his name next to the most back-to-back 1000-yard seasons to start a pro football career. His record at 9 is a very rare sight, especially for his position of wide receiver. Just six other wideouts in the entire league hold similar stats of yard covering.

He is also in the queue for a three-way tie for the 3rd most back-to-back seasons with 1000 or more receiving yards. Matt Lively took to X to share that Evans is standing on yet another crucial threshold, tweeting, “He’d be one shy of #49ers WR Jerry Rice’s record of 11 straight 1000 yard receiving seasons.”

Jerry Rice accomplished the feat in 11 consecutive seasons starting in 1986. Rice has under his belt 14 total seasons where he registered 1000 or more receiving yards, over his two-decade-long career. So, will Evans be able to break the record of Rice?

Factors that could work in Evans’ favor

What’s one thing that could work in Mike Evans’ favor? It is indeed his health. He is one of the few wideouts who has remained consistently healthy, playing at least 15  games in every season of his career. And at the stage that he is in, every single game weighs heavily on the record scale. A missed game could result in him breaking his 9-game streak so far.

“I think about. It’s right there, so I’m gonna definitely try to go get that,” Evans told KPRC 2 Houston’s Ari Alexander. “I’m already one of one right now. I hope I can pass the great Jerry Rice and his record. Obviously, nobody will pass his records probably, like ever, total. But that 1,000-yard streak record would be cool to have.”
