Next Sunday’s game will be a special one for Bill Belichick! And not for the reasons you may think. The NFL world is abuzz with a rumor. What is the rumor? The game against the

New York Jets might be Belichick’s last. The Pats and the Jets are long-standing divisional rivals. But the Jets have done a better job for themselves this year. The Pats? Not so much. They are not just at the bottom of their division, but the entire conference as well.

But Belichick has another connection to the New York team. Wondering what it might be? Belichick had resigned as HC of the Jets on the same day he joined it. On Sunday, he will wrap up his worst season as HC of the Patriots. But will it be his final game with the Pats as well? Will the coach jump ship after 2023?

Will Belichick leave the Pats after Sunday?

The first rumblings of Belichick leaving the Pats were first head in November. Tom Curran of NBC Sports, had reported that “a decision was made”. What was the decision that will change the course of the Patriots? “A parting of the ways,” he said. But unlike the Las Vegas Raiders, they were not going to fire him mid-season. Robert Kraft said that they would take a decision after the conclusion of the current season.

Even if the Pats win against the Jets at Gillette Stadium, it’s not going to do them any good. They are clearly out of playoff contention. The only silver lining in all of this is that they will get an early pick in the NFL Draft 2024. But it’s not just the season that is at stake here. If the Jets win on Sunday, they will snap a Patriots streak.

What will be at stake on Sunday?

When reporters hounded him about the Jets game, what did he say? “I’m looking forward to working, getting ready for the Jets,” was his dry reply. The squad is currently in the midst of a four-year playoff drought. The team has been cursed with injuries and offensive issues for four seasons now.

The Jets, on the other hand, hoped to zoom past other teams. But their Super Bowl dreams were crushed with Aaron Rodgers’ injury. Zach Wilson has not been able to resuscitate the team so far. But it seems that history is on the Pats side. The Jets have tasted defeat at their hands for 15 straight times now. Will the Pats keep the momentum going on Sunday?

If they lose, they will snap this streak. Not only that, but it will be the HC’s 178th defeat. This is an NFL record which he holds with Tom Landry. He wouldnn’t want to end his time with the Pats on this note.
