Russell Wilson did not have an ideal season with the Broncos. The dynamics eventually led to the former Super Bowl champion signing a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. While many eyebrows were raised when the team took in Justin Fields as well, coach Mike Tomlin made an almost clear stance concerning the veteran QB Wilson.

He said, “Russell is in pole position. His collective body of work merits that. But we’re really excited to have Justin as well. During the course of team development, training camp and preseason he’ll be given the opportunity to compete.” Thus, indicating how Wilson has a lead and Fields won’t shy away from competition. However, in a recent interview with JM Football, ESPN’s Field Yates put forth a curious narrative, challenging Wilson’s starter role.

Field Yates while highlighting Russ’ off-season endeavors said, “I do think that, you know, it’s not a certainty that Russell Wilson is a starting quarterback in week 1, not a certainty at all.” For the 37-year-old Mike Tomlin’s earlier “pole position” words to the press might as well be “just words.”  The analyst strongly underlined how while he might bet on the fact that Fields will open Week 1 for the Steelers, “it’s very much a possibility and I just think at some time this season they are going to have to give Justin Fields.”

Yates elaborated his stance by pointing out that both the individuals, given their last season, are “imperfect.” However, for him, “Justin can do some things that Russ at this stage of his career is simply incapable of doing at high level.” According to Yates, Fields holds an impact on the game much more than Russell Wilson, especially as a dual threat quarterback.

While commenting “Big time and I think it could be sooner than later,” on whether Justin Fields could be picked over Wilson to be the team’s starter this year, it is salient to note that, Fields former coach seems to think he is not the best idea as a quarterback.

Justin Fields’ former coach points out his flaw

The Pittsburgh Steelers seem to be quite taken with quarterback, Justin Fields. However, a former coach of the athlete revealed that everything is not always as it seems. With the Bears landing Caleb Williams in the Draft, everyone presumed Fields would be let go, But apparently, it may have happened even if Chicago had missed out on the young star.

In an interview with Go Long, an anonymous former coach opened up about the 25-year-old. He claimed that while Fields was talented, he had one big problem that he struggled with. It was his field vision and decision-making, thanks to his lack of passing during a match. The former coach stated, “Watch his eyes. He tries to see the whole thing and doesn’t see anything. His eyes are all over the place and it’s just really hard to watch. It’s just bad football.”

Although the former coach seemed less than impressed with Fields, it looks like the quarterback has been stealing hearts in the Steelers camp. However, with Russell Wilson, healthy and still in the running for starter, there is no way of saying what could happen until the 2024 season kicks off later in September. But one thing is for sure, it will be one awe-striking season.
