Five days into the 2025 Free Agency, the Steelers QB situation remains unsolved. First, HC Mike Tomlin was not able to retain Justin Fields, who went on to sign with the NY Jets, now it seems like the veteran coach is left with not enough options. Yes, just a week back, there were confirmed talks going on between Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers. Adam Schefter of ESPN noted, “Aaron Rodgers has emerged as a quarterback option in Pittsburgh, per league sources… The idea of Rodgers playing for Mike Tomlin is in play.” While this seemed like a perfect marriage for both parties, the latest developments put the entire situation in jeopardy.
From being one of the most decorated QBs in the NFL to not being able to find a home, Rodgers’ current situation is way more complicated than it may seem. Well, well, well, how the mighty have fallen. One day, it looks like Aaron Rodgers will finally make his decision on his NFL future. Then again we are served with nothing. Whether it’s the weekdays or the weekends, Rodgers still remains a free agent for the first time in his career. Actually, it’s not like he was devoid of offers until today. Yep, the latest reports suggest Rodgers might be mulling retirement as teams are still waiting to hear back from the 41-year-old.
Throughout this week, there were three questions constantly hovering over Rodgers’ future. Will he join forces with Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh? Was he really edging towards staying in the Big Apple for the Giants’ rebuilding project? Or was Rodgers dreaming of the Brett Favre way—that could have seen him return to the NFC North with the Vikings? Well, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler has kind of revealed the answers to those three questions.

According to his whisperers, “Rodgers does have standing offers from the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. Teams are waiting this out, waiting on Rodgers. The feeling is there’s not just a money consideration here. There’s fit, there’s surroundings, all those things.” So, is Rodgers a good or bad fit for the Steelers? Umm, to be honest, if Rodgers decides to carry on playing, the Steelers are the best fit for him. It has an established culture and a well-respected coach who has yet to record a losing season. And to make this pairing more interesting—the two still dream of winning a second Super Bowl.
ESPN’s @JFowlerESPN with an update on Aaron Rodgers: “I’m told from sources that Rodgers does have standing offers from the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants. Teams are waiting this out, waiting on Rodgers. The feeling is there’s not just a money consideration here. There’s…

Tomlin did it in 2008, and Rodgers two years later with the Packers. So if they connect again to do it all over, it won’t be a bad idea, right? But again, is Rodgers really going to bring the Tom Brady effect to Pittsburgh after two miserable seasons in New York? Well, that’s something that probably won’t happen. As for Rodgers, the Steelers aren’t the only standing offer he has on the table. He also has the chance to do the funniest thing ever. And stay in New York and rub more salt in the wounds of Gang Green by shifting his allegiance to Big Blues.

What’s the latest on Rodgers to the Giants?
Looking at what Jeremy Fowler reported, the Giants also have a standing offer like Pittsburgh for A-Rod. But there have also been reports that the Giants are growing extremely frustrated seeing the lack of movement from Rodgers’ side. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported, “Everybody is waiting. Everyone’s frustrated. I’ll tell you that. I feel like the New York Giants are almost at a point right now where they’re just ignoring it and they’re just trying to find another plan in case this doesn’t work out.” Well, that’s another plan that comes in Joe Flacco and Russell Wilson.

Both have been slated to visit the Giants front office in order to materialize a move. But there hasn’t been any from that front either. Why? Because the Giants have reportedly been chasing Rodgers since the NFL Combine. They tried to go all in for Matthew Stafford until he decided to stay back in LA for at least another season. And that led to them pivoting back to Rodgers while keeping Wilson as their backup plan. But it could be too risky for the Giants if they wait too long. What if? The Steelers re-sign Wilson and the Vikings refuse to sign Rodgers, who is reportedly waiting to hear from them. Those possibilities coming true would mean Wilson is gone and Rodgers is retired.

Surely, the Giants wouldn’t want to keep their QB room vacant before the NFL draft. Because no matter whom they pick, they cannot possibly plan things ahead without a franchise signal-caller. This rebuild will never happen until the Giants bring a veteran QB or anyone they can get their hands on right now. Fumbling Rodgers and Wilson will surely start the back counting to Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen’s era in the Big Apple—Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock…..
