Cooper Kupp’s free agency was a massive surprise. No one expected the Rams to release the WR after no teams expressed interest in trading him. Ouch. While it is a tough time for Kupp, the WR is still holding no grudges with the team. Last week, there were several reports and speculations that many teams were interested in approaching him. Among these teams, the Patriots were the most favorable option for the WR. But! Things have changed dramatically this week.

One of the reports came out to reveal that many teams who could have signed the WR have backed off. Yep! That’s right. Teams such as the Patriots, Broncos, and Texans are not at all looking for Kupp to be their WR1. It’s hard to see such a bad downfall for the 31-year-old after all he is the same man who was a catastrophic WR in 2021. The man put up a stellar show in the 2021 season, during which he led his team with 145 receptions, 1,947 receiving yards, and 16 touchdowns, culminating in a Super Bowl MVP award. But things haven’t been the same for him since then.

Injuries and performance inconsistency caught up to him leading to this report, The #Patriots are no longer in the market for WR Cooper Kupp, per @DMRussini. Russini says that along with New England, Denver and Houston are teams that are ‘not in the Cooper Kupp market’ that she believed would be. Looks like the focus is shifting to the draft (or a trade).” Another reason for his release could be the Rams’ new signing Davante Adams. They signed the six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver to a two-year contract and obviously Adams can be their WR1. This clearly was an example of the saying, “One man’s fortune is another man’s misfortune.”

Cooper Kupp’s future NFL road is a difficult one indeed. Many players have faced the same situation and well, the records for them haven’t been that good. Consider Cam Newton. He was an MVP-winning QB who led the Panthers to the Super Bowl. But what happened after that? The injuries caught up to him, leading to his collapse, and he was never able to get a long-term contract beyond 2020. The hope is that anything like this does not happen to Kupp. His 2024 season was also great, as he collected 67 receptions and 6 touchdowns.

These figures will almost certainly get him on a team. After all these figures, it also made it difficult for the Rams to release him in the first place.

Sean McVay admits that Cooper Kupp’s release was a very painful decision

Releasing a WR in whom the team has invested so heavily would be a difficult decision for them to make. The HC Sean McVay highlighted these things but claimed that the team needed to see the bigger picture moving forward. It has been 3 years since the team has appeared in the Super Bowl and they need to focus on that rather than focusing on a player.

What’s your perspective on:

Did the Rams make a mistake letting go of Kupp, or was it a necessary move?

Have an interesting take?

McVay revealed all these things in a recent media appearance, “It’s about the big picture, but it was hard. It was really hard. I think there’s a lot of love. I think he understands how much he’s meant to me. I do think that in spite of a uniquely challenging situation, I know that the relationship and the bond that we have is strong enough to be able to sustain.”

Cooper Kupp may find these to be the perfect explanation for the Rams’ current situation. The team needed to try a new QB-WR combination and see if it worked better for them. For now, we can see that Davante Adams and Matthew Stafford are going to be the new QB-WR tandem for them. While no clear front-runner has emerged, recent reports suggest that teams like the Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints could be potential landing spots. Both teams are looking to add depth at wide receiver, and Kupp’s experience and skill set could make him an appealing option. Only time will tell what is going to happen with the WR.
