Pick this….pick that….or pick both. Picking up the right quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers is probably tougher than picking up a QB in an NFL game. Indeed! Mike Tomlin and the franchise haven’t decided yet on whom they are moving forward with – Russell Wilson or Justin Fields? And to make the situation even more complex, they have a few new names lately. Aaron Rodgers or Matthew Stafford? Who is gonna be the next starter for the Steel City?
We already know that Matthew Stafford might be released from the Los Angeles Rams, especially after seeking $50 million per year. On the other hand, the New York Jets have already decided to end their 2-year marriage with Aaron Rodgers. So, this offseason will probably see both of them landing in different spots. But here the question is: Will that spot be the Steelers?
Steelers correspondent for the Pat McAfee Show, Mark Kaboly tried to clear this up. The analyst joined The Zach Gelb Show, where he gave his perspective on Mike Tomlin’s QB situation. During the discussion, QB expressed, “No, I don’t think either one of those” (Aaron Rodgers or Matthew Stafford) will be the QB of the team. Then who will be?

As per Kaboly, “I think priority number one is Justin Fields. The problem is, there’s nobody under contract currently on the Steelers roster as a quarterback. So, you got to be very careful of how they approach this. I mean you can find yourself real quickly on the outside looking in and being scrambling for the leftovers, so to speak of the quarterback position. So, they have finesse this a little bit and pretend to be interested in just about everybody right now until somebody signs on that dotted line. I think that it’s Justin Fields that they want.”
So, according to Kaboly, Justin Fields is the man who’s gonna step up as the next quarterback for the franchise. However, the analyst also highlighted some important twists. He said that if the Jets or Giants will approach Fields for a better price, then he might leave Mike Tomlin’s squad. And then, in that case, the HC will have to move ahead with Russell Wilson (after all, he is the Plan B). Hence, the team is keeping both of them in their order.
And as for Matthew Stafford or Aaron Rodgers, if the Steelers aren’t ready to keep Wilson, then they might keep these two free agents in the mix. However, Stafford can still be considered a “pipe dream” for Mike Tomlin’s team when compared with Aaron Rodgers. But overall, if they choose one player this time, it could be Justin Fields. But does the Steelers’s general manager also have a similar thought?
Steelers’s GM hints at Mike Tomlin’s QB hope?
The Steelers’s 2024 season was on the brink of becoming a memorable one. But all of a sudden, the continuous five losses dashed all their hopes. Nevertheless, as they are trying to build their roster once again this offseason, after a chaotic season, Mike Tomlin’s team is again stuck in the same position. Or probably worse this time. But GM Omar Khan has a plan in his mind.

In a recent interview on Tuesday, Khan said, “I think ideally like to sign one of the guys that we had last year. But the reality is they’re both free agents. So until we get one of those guys under contract, all options are on the table. I don’t know how realistic it is that all three will be back. But there’s an opportunity for there to be a combination of a couple of those guys who will be back. We’ll be happy with that.” That cleared some air.
His statement hinted at both Wilson and Fields returning to the roster. However, as the GM mentioned, Mike Tomlin’s team is also exploring other available options in the market.
