“I feel like I was playing some pretty good football.” Leading the Los Angeles Rams into the playoffs for three seasons in his four years with the team, Matthew Stafford is indeed something. And with him admitting his pretty good game, the quarterback isn’t wrong at all–at least as per many NFL analysts. However, there are two things now. One, Stafford is 37 years old. Second, he is demanding a massive salary.
As Matthew Stafford is 37, many expect him to call off a career in the league. But at the moment, he doesn’t feel so. It’s because when asked if he has football left in him, the QB clearly stated, “Sure feels like it.” If we look at the paper, he still has two years left in his contract. However, given the current situation of his age and the wage demand, Stafford is likely to be released by the team.
But the scene is the other teams who are seeking an experienced QB might contact Matthew Stafford. So, will he go there or wait for the Rams to pay him an arm and a leg this offseason? Or will he hang up his cleats, leaving everything on the table? As per recent reports, that might not be true, at least for now. Why? It’s because the NFL Rumors on X posted a statement: “#Rams Matthew Stafford is looking for a 2-year deal for around $100M with LA or his next team.”

The post claims the QB is eyeing a two-year, $100 million deal – keeping his annual price tag at $50 million. But the real takeaway isn’t just the money. It’s the timeline. Rumors suggest Matthew Stafford may have just hinted at his retirement plans without meaning it. By limiting his contract demand to two years, he reportedly might be signaling he plans to play until 2027 – hanging up his cleats at 39.
Well, 39 is a great retirement age, especially when the athlete plays solid football. Earlier it was reported that “This is a money issue, and Matthew Stafford wants to be paid what he thinks he’s worth. He wants to be paid more than $50 million,” via NFL Network’s Peter Schrager.
But now, as per rumors, Stafford is seeking $100M for 2 years, hinting he isn’t backing off from what he said earlier. But this situation now brings us to another important question:
If not the Rams, then which team for Matthew Stafford?
Significantly, Matthew Stafford signed a 4 year, $160,000,000 contract with the Rams in 2021. However, he signed an extension in 2022, getting another four-year, $160 million deal. This made him earn about $40 million per season on average. But now he wants $50 million per year, and that too for 2 years.
On the other hand, the Rams likely don’t want to commit a big chunk of money to an aging quarterback. Hence, they have allowed him to talk to other teams available in the market. So, who could be the one, if not LA?
It’s pretty clear Matthew Stafford is concerned more about his wallet. This means whichever team pays him big will sign him up. As per reports, four teams are interested in him. First is the Raiders, who have $99.5 million in cap space. With Pete Carroll in charge, it’s safe to say that he already knows what QB brings to the table. After all, they have played against each other twice yearly, when Carroll was with the Seahawks.
In addition, the team has Tom Brady as a minority owner. He is involved in the QB search, too. If anyone knows how a veteran quarterback can turn a team into a Super Bowl contender overnight, it’s Brady. He did it in Tampa. Stafford did it in LA. The Raiders might not give up their No. 6 pick, but the 37th pick?
That’s a real possibility!

Besides them, the Steelers have been searching for their next franchise quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired. Right now, Justin Fields and Russell Wilson are in the mix, but neither feels like a sure thing. If Pittsburgh wants someone who can instantly elevate the team, Stafford is the guy.

It’s also because they have a $60.1 million cap space. Then come the Giants with $48.4 million cap space. Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen are under pressure to win now. They nailed the 2024 draft, landing Malik Nabers and Tyrone Tracy Jr., but a quarterback remains the missing piece. Stafford could be exactly what they need to take the next step.
And then, there’s Cleveland. The Browns are drowning in cap trouble, sitting $24 million in the red. They’re already making moves to clear space, but landing Stafford would take a serious financial overhaul. And with Myles Garrett looking for a way out, Stafford might get his place.
But will the QB even want to be there without Garrett? The trade season is going to be interesting for sure!
