The Vikings lost their wild card playoff against the Rams and exited the 2024 season. Since then, they have been evaluating different moves to make changes that would take them a step further. And looks like their head coach Kevin O’Connell has come out with the right moves. It starts with keeping talented players in the team.

Their linebacker, Andrew Van Ginkel, playing his first year for the Vikes, had his best so far. In 17 regular season games this year, he recorded 2 interceptions for touchdowns, 11.5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 19 QB hits, and 79 tackles (50 solo). His contract was set to expire in 2026. But the head coach wants to sign him to a 3-year $45 million contract extension. That’s great news!

In November 2024, the head coach recognized the linebacker’s contribution and said, “I love him to death. He’s been huge. It’s been really cool to watch.” Last year, he signed a 2-year $20 million deal with the Vikings. If he signs the new contract, he will earn 1.5 times what he earns in his current deal. The outside linebacker who doubles up as an edge rusher impressed Kevin O’Connell. This year has been full of achievements for the 29-year-old. His first feat was selection in the NFC Pro Bowl roster for the first time. He was subsequently selected for the Second-team All-Pro.

While the Vikings are trying to keep players, they might have to enter the free market for a quarterback. The team is looking at their future from a different perspective.

Kevin O’Connell’s QB on his path to change allegiances

Their QB Sam Darnold might go to Tom Brady‘s Raiders. The move hasn’t been confirmed yet. But reports suggest he might ride his 14-win regular season performance to newly appointed HC Pete Carroll‘s side in 2025. This may not be the worst thought for the purple and gold whose image of the QB came crashing down with his abysmal showing in two crunch games at the end of their season. The first in the final game of the regular season going h2h with the Lions for top spot in the NFC North. The second in the wildcard game against the Rams where he was sacked a record 9 times.

Ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, this move has come a bit out of left field. But it is being linked to the Raiders desperate need for an NFL-proven quarterback. There were reports that they might try to draft a good college signal caller. They have the 6th pick in the draft this year, but relying solely on it wouldn’t be a wise idea. And waiting any longer might prove harmful.

Kevin O’Connell’s QB has also garnered interest from another franchise, the NY Giants. They are also looking for someone who could revive them. But they have more chance of drafting the top prospect as they have 3rd pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Most analysts believe the NY Giants might get Shedeur Sanders.
