The draft has come and gone. But Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones is still checking out his options in the free agency. They are still checking out improvements in the receiver room. With 10.3 receiving yards per reception, the receiving room definitely needs major upgrades. WR1 CeeDee Lamb hoped that they would go for a receiver in the draft. But they didn’t. In the era of uncertainties, the franchise is trying to get back the old receiver. Someone who has played with Dak Prescott.

Some sources added fuel to the rumors that they are trying to sign up their old WR Amari Cooper. The Cowboys acquired him in 2018 midseason after giving up their 2019 first-round pick to the Raiders. He also impressed Jerry Jones with 8 receptions in 180 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns in the week 12 game against Redskins. The owner said after the game, “That Amari looked like he’s making a bid for some cash.” Dak Prescott also favored Cooper when the franchise signed a 5-year, $100 million extension in 2020, with $60 million guaranteed. But his performance dropped.

Amari Cooper in 2020: 16 games (15 starters) – 92 receptions in 1,114 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns

Amari Cooper in 2021: 15 games (14 starters) – 68 receptions in 865 receptions and 8 touchdowns

It forced Jerry Jones to trade Cooper, as they had already bet on CeeDee Lamb to become the ace receiver. And he showed his talent with 135 receptions in 1,749 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns in 17 games (all starters).  Jones traded him to the Browns in 2022 for the 5th-round pick and an exchange of 6th-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

We went for the dollars. When we traded Amari Cooper, we saved almost $20 million for our cap and in the future. We took a lesser draft pick to get that savings,” Jerry Jones said while talking about the trade in 2022. However, now they are trying to bring him back to the franchise.

It wasn’t just him. After struggling at receiver, the Cowboys also extended KaVontae Turpin with a three-year, $13.5 million deal in March. Then, who did Jones sign in the Draft? Just a few. Free agency now holds their hopes.

What’s your perspective on:

Is bringing back Amari Cooper the answer to the Cowboys' receiving woes, or just a step back?

Jerry Jones is trying to strengthen Dak Prescott

In the 2025 NFL Draft, America’s Team signed 3 offensive players. The first-round (12th overall) Alabama OG Tyler Booker, fifth-round pick (149th overall) Texas RB Jaydon Blue, and seventh-round pick (239th overall) Clemson RB Phil Mafah. But there was no wideout for Dak Prescott.

It definitely was a big-time thought, but the train has not left the station if improvement is needed from what we’ve got on campus. But definitely the idea that we could, if the opportunity comes up, if we want to, can address this in free agency.” Jerry Jones said about free agency. The mood is clear. They still want receivers.

CeeDee Lamb needs help on the field. Even with Dak Prescott missing half the 2024 season due to injury and playing just eight games, Lamb still put up impressive numbers—101 catches for 1,194 yards and six touchdowns in 15 starts. While the front office seems content with their draft picks, fans are still hoping for stronger offensive weapons. With $37 million in cap space, there’s still room to make a move.
