Dak Prescott might get to choose between his job and money in future. And it seems, the Dallas Cowboys quarterback has already chosen one. With Trevor Lawrence’s contract extension news, the 30-year-old man’s comments about his contract situation, three weeks ago, is likely to become true.
The Jaguars’ QB Lawrence reportedly signed a 5 year, $275 million monster deal. As he secured his job with the team, Prescott too wants to do the same. Earlier owner Jerry Jones committed that Prescott’s worth would depend on others’ contracts. Now, Lawrence’s new deal might pull him from spending money for a while.

As it was speculated earlier that with time, Dak Prescott’s price will increase too. The same thing is happening now. According to NFL Rumors on their official X account, “Dallas Cowboys Dak Prescott reportedly wants a record setting deal.” Owner Jerry Jones initially wanted to wait and see how other contracts in the NFL played out before negotiating with Prescott.

Now, with other quarterbacks like Trevor Lawrence signing big contracts, Prescott’s value has potentially risen to unprecedented levels, possibly reaching $60 million per year. Prescott is currently in the last year of his contract (a four-year, $160 million deal) and could either play out the season to enter free agency or negotiate a new deal with the Cowboys.
Despite the money involved, Prescott has emphasized in May, after OTAs that – “I don’t play for money. Never have never cared for it, to be honest with you, yeah.” He additionally highlighted that his focus remains on playing football and helping his team succeed. But now with Lawrence and others getting monster deals, Prescott too might be choosing money over a long-term deal with the Cowboys. As a result, this will help him to enter free agency for a high price, just like Vikings’ QB Kirk Cousins did.
Meanwhile, the negotiations between Prescott and the Cowboys have been ongoing but do not seem close to reaching an agreement for a new contract.
Will Dallas Cowboys strike a last-minute deal for Prescott?
There are some pros and cons to the contract extension of Dak Prescott. A new contract could free up money in the short term for the Cowboys, allowing them to build a stronger team. Owner Jerry Jones has often talked about going “all-in” for a championship, and this could help. Prescott is a proven and respected quarterback who has led the team to five playoff runs, earned three Pro Bowl selections, and thrown over 30 touchdown passes three times. In 2023, at age 30, he was even considered for MVP due to his impressive performance (4,516 yards, 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions). However, not everything is perfect.

There are some cons to the extension. The first is that the team is at a critical point, with coach Mike McCarthy under pressure. Extending Prescott would mean continuing with the current setup, which hasn’t led to much playoff success. Despite good regular season stats, Prescott has a 2-5 playoff record with only one postseason win in the last five years. Additionally, he’s also had significant injuries in two of the past four seasons. However, it’s true that Prescott’s immediate future with the Cowboys is secure, but beyond this season, it’s uncertain.
Thus, the Cowboys might not rush into a new deal with him, instead, they might let him play out his current contract and see if he and McCarthy achieve significant success this season, aligning with Jones’ current approach.
