If there is one thing Andy Reid would want to work on during the offseason, it is the KC Chiefs’ offense. With Patrick Mahomes leading the charge, the Chiefs had an incredible season and ultimately fixed their date with the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. But it did not take much for Jalen Carter and Cooper DeJean to control Mahomes and expose the Chiefs’ offense. After the Chiefs’ brutal loss, NFL analyst Tim Hasselbeck also pointed out that Andy Reid needs to do better and protect Mahomes at any cost if you are building your team around him. “Mahomes is their largest investment. You need to protect him. … It’s about his future which I’m sure they feel like is hopefully at least another decade,” Hasselbeck said. While Reid is willing to do everything it takes to get his team back on its feet, will he take a chance against someone who has all the reasons to hate the Chiefs?
While Andy Reid’s team is focusing on building their offense this time, they came across someone with two Super Bowl experiences in their resume. The 49ers have already okayed their legendary wide receiver Deebo Samuels for a move. Although Deebo lost two Super Bowls against the Chiefs, Reid knew what the 29-year-old WR would bring to the table.
Well, we don’t need to tell how good Deebo has been for the Niners, do we? The first WR in NFL history with 20 TD receptions and 20 TD runs last season, Deebo is already a superstar for the franchise. However, the 29-year-old is disgruntled now as he thinks Kyle Shanahan’s San Francisco 49ers aren’t utilizing him enough in the games. Hence, this offseason, he requested a trade from the team.

Since then, many teams have been named as the right choice for Kyle Shanahan’s star WR Samuel. This also included Andy Reid’s Chiefs, because of the WR’s rushing ability, he could have added a dynamic to their offense. No doubt about that! But the latest reports suggest that the Chiefs aren’t interested anymore in the WR. According to radio host Bob Fescoe, “Per Source: Deebo Samuel is not an option for KC now. There could be clarity on Trey Smith as early as this weekend.”

Earlier this week, Andy Reid and GM Brett Veach showed their support for Trey Smith. They even hinted that the Chiefs will be signing the guard further. But as for Samuel, it seems the Chiefs might not be eyeing him this time. However, the reasons haven’t been revealed yet. But many are speculating it to be the “hate” for the team. Well, that’s what the WR said in a podcast in January.
He expressed, “They beat me twice, so I got all the reason to hate. Not going to lie, losing a Super Bowl, it puts you in depression. You go months without talking to people, [not] wanting to be seen. Losing the Super Bowl is one of the worst feelings ever. Think about it in our position; we just went through camp, we just went through the whole season, we got here, we lose….I lost in the Super Bowl twice to the same team.” Deebo Samuel is indeed frustrated after losing to the Chiefs twice (2020 and 2024). Probably, his hate will not allow him to be with them.
Nevertheless, it’s quite possible that if not the Chiefs or others, Deebo Samuel could be in Kyle Shanahan’s team once again.
Did Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers change their decision?
In 2022, Deebo Samuel requested a trade from Kyle Shanahan’s team. Why? It happened due to a contract dispute. However, later the 49ers addressed the matter saying the WR is a versatile player for the team. And hence, they signed him to a three-year, $71.5 million extension. But after three years, the matter has come to the same place. With the contract expiring, Samuel once again requested a trade. But this time, Shanahan and the 49ers have allowed him to contact the WR-seeking teams. The story isn’t over here. A new twist has come into it!
In Indianapolis, 49ers general manager John Lynch addressed the trade talks for Deebo Samuel. He although expressed his honor for WR’s choice, Lynch hinted that the talks are still on with Kyle Shanahan’s team. The GM stated that he and his team are not “interested” in moving off from a star player. And Samuel is the one!

Explaining the present situation, Lynch expressed, “Still not interested, but along those lines of the financial constraints and some conversations we’ve had with Deebo, it’s something, we’ve been forthright with that. We’re on good terms with Deebo. He’s asked for a fresh start and I think we’re going to honor that. I don’t like seeing great players leave and he is a great player. I think often one of my favorite draft picks in my time. He makes plays and he makes game-changing plays and everything’s good. But I think at some point, time happens. He asked for that. We don’t always, there’s contracts and things, but it probably makes sense. So we’re at least allowing him to look and we’re having conversations. We’ll see where that goes.”

Although Lynch didn’t confirm keeping Samuel on the team, he also didn’t strongly suggest trading him to another team. Hmm….it seems Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers are keeping both options alive until their final decision.
