The New England Patriots are in for a major shakeup! They lost to the New York Jets on Sunday, which was a major humiliation. Not only did they lose 3-17, but they also snapped a 15-game winning streak against the Jets. Many fans think there could not have been a worse way to end the season. Amidst this gloom and doom, the Pats have not decided to fire HC Bill Belichick. But they could be stripping him of another key duty.

While this is not definitive, Belichick himself said so during his latest presser. What is this position that Belichick has been asked to vacate? And who could replace him?

Belichick’s press conference after the loss to the Jets was pretty uneventful. But he did reveal something that could decide the future of the Pats. Mark Daniels reported the same on X. In the presser, Belichick had said that he would be okay with giving up his post as GM of the Pats. But what’s the trade-off? Owner Robert Kraft would have to let him remain as the head coach of the team.

He said that he had several roles in the team. How he gets his day-to-day stuff is by delegating to other people. But now he said that one person has to have the final say. Belichick said he could be still in the decision-making team, but only would be a part of it and not its heart and soul.

The team could actually do with a new perspective at the managerial level. Belichick has been accused of focusing too much on defense, which has led to the Pats’ current situation. Now that it could be an actual reality, who could replace Belichick as GM?

Pats’ best option for a new GM

The name being thrown around the most is that of Adam Peters. Peters is a 6-year Pats member. He worked in various roles, such as with the scouting department. But then he moved to the Denver Broncos in 2009. Post that, he moved to the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 and now serves as their assistant GM.

If the Pats do make the call to strip Belichick of his GM duties, it will be a first for the team since 1983. What first? The Pats will have two different people holding the GM and HC titles. Peters already has experience working with the Patriots and was a close contributor to their rise from 2000 to 2009. Will he finally be the cure to the Pats’ woes?
