Robert Kraft didn’t ring Ben Johnson‘s doorbell for the Patriots job. But he’s getting a promotion to the much-deserved HC role anyway. The Commanders, for all they have been through in the past week, are showing their interest in the Lions‘ OC, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.

The Josh Harris-led franchise made a quick intermediate plan to hire a GM first on Thursday and got it. The Commanders settled down with former 49ers’ assistant GM Adam Peters, out of 5 candidates, with every interview scheduled on the same day. Now Peters, as per plans, may have put his trust in Johnson.

Johnson has been under the radar of multiple NFL franchises this season. He led the Lions offense that clinched their maiden NFC North title entering the playoffs. While the Patriots decided to go with their linebackers coach Jerod Mayo, the offensive coordinator has something saved for him too. And it may be the Commanders’ job, that can come as early as next Tuesday.

Days ago, after Ron Rivera‘s firing, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Commanders asked for the Rams‘ permission to set up an interview with their DC Raheem Morris. Who, interestingly, has also been approached by the Falcons for his past stint that took the team through a difficult time.

Since the regular season’s ending, he has been on a roll, firing Rivera and hiring two leading executives to assist him with his next decisions. The group set their eyes on the vacant GM role and also on the head of football operations role, initially. And got it.

Peters was chosen by the franchise from a group of 5 candidates, according to Mr. Jones. They were the Chiefs‘ Mike Borgonzi, Browns‘ Glenn Cook, Eagles‘ Alec Halaby, and the Bears‘ Ian Cunningham. Cunningham and Peters were the finalists and eventually, Peters passed the criteria for the role.

Peters helped in bringing names like Christian McCaffrey and Brock Purdy to the 49ers. Will he emulate the success in the national capital? For that, he first needs to find their next coach, which Johnson is a leading candidate for.
