The New York Jets have been all over the place for a while now. A stat for you – the 2024-25 NFL season was their 5th consecutive season with 10 or more losses. The Gang Green are probably contemplating what’s the point of flocking to the MetLife Stadium to cheer for the team that will let them down. Patience has run out, and the desperation for positive results in the 2024-25 campaign saw the owners respond by sacking head coach (HC) Robert Saleh after just 5 games, and this was after they let go of their previous HC Joe Douglas before the start of the season. The team is in a literal freefall right now.

In this mad frenzy, the Jets are looking at some of the coaching staff from the Detroit Lions. One name doing the rounds for the Jets head coach position is Aaron Glenn. Working as a Defensive Coordinator for the Lions, Glenn was one of the key members responsible for the Detroit charge to the playoffs. The experts have acknowledged his work, and many even think he would be a great head coach.

However, ESPN NFL reporter Kimberly A. Martin had one key point to make about Aaron Glenn’s rumored appointment. Although everything looks right about Jet’s pursuit of Glenn, she is concerned about his lack of experience as a head coach. “The one caveat is … he has never done it before. So that is the only thing where we can’t look at past and say, ‘Oh, well he’s been successful as a head coach elsewhere.’ He has not. So we will see what he is able to do.”

Kimberly’s point has to be looked at from the perspective of what the incoming head coach will need to do and the pressure he will be under. The new coach won’t be taking over the reins of a serial winner team with a high-quality roster at his disposal. The Jets are rather trying to break some records in terms of losing maybe. Rock Bottom ain’t that far away. In such a scenario, going for inexperience may be a suicidal gamble.

Yes, Aaron Glenn’s pedigree as a strict disciplinarian, which got the Detroit bunch to look like well-drilled professionals in the regular season, will probably be something that the Jets dressing room will definitely need. The Jets need a leader who can get the boys to listen and follow through. They didn’t look like a unit in 2024-25, and if anything, Glenn’s leadership can bring it back.

But being in the hot seat is a totally different ball game. You are the man! The final guy to make the call! The HC job comes with responsibilities that a defensive coordinator would never have to worry about. Is Aaron Glenn ready to take the next step?

What’s your perspective on:

Is Aaron Rodgers still the answer for the Jets, or is it time to move on?

Have an interesting take?

For him to turn the Jet’s fortunes around, he will have to address every gap and weakness that the Jets have had in 2024, the most important of them being Aaron Rodgers.

How will Aaron Glenn tackle the Aaron Rodgers problem?

Rodgers has been very poor since his Jets switch in 2023. His performance has left fans bewildered. Isn’t he a former Super Bowl Champion? Wasn’t he supposed to solve our problems? No, if anything, he has even added to the crisis. There were rumors that Rodgers had a falling out with Saleh prior to the coach’s dismissal. The veteran quarterback had apparently undermined the coach’s authority. This is something no coach would want. This leaves the incoming coach with a critical decision to make.

After all, the new coach and his staff will start with new ideas and systems for the new season. Can Aaron Rodgers adapt at 41 years old? He said he would make himself available, but he has to be vouched by the new HC. Rodgers is implying that he still has life for one more NFL, but the HC should not just take his word for it. After returning from injury, he finished the 2024-25 season strong – 1270 yards in the last 5 games with 9 touchdowns. But is that enough?

And in case the Jets let Rodgers go, there is a genuine possibility that this will be the end of Aaron Rodgers’ playing career. Rodgers has accomplished the highest of honors in the NFL and this situation will not be amongst his most cherished moments.

What makes the Aaron Rodgers dilemma so dicey is that the guy is a 4-time NFL MVP, with the last time him being crowned the MVP in 2021. In fact, this decision will be a test of the head coach’s credibility. Will Glenn be able to make the right choice if he does become the next HC? Pressure builds diamonds.
