Brock Purdy had a pretty quiet rookie season. But not this season. The San Francisco 49ers have made it to the playoffs and a great deal of that is owed to Purdy. During that time, he has managed to make a name for himself as well. Now Purdy is a frontrunner in the NFL MVP race.
So, how did the quarterback who got drafted last in his year rise to this level? And on 9th February 2024, will he be able to beat the other hopefuls contending with him?

It might surprise you to know that Purdy was drafted last in his year. And that was not the worst thing about it. The QB was not only drafted last but also came with the title of “Mr. Irrelevant”. But after Tom Brady, we know the draft pick number is not the only detriment of greatness. The GOAT of football was drafted 199th overall, and we all know how that ended up. Maybe Purdy has a chip on his shoulder as well that makes him work extra hard to prove doubters wrong.
This season, he has a successful pass completion rate of 69.4%. And he recorded a mammoth 4,280 passing yards and 31 touchdowns with just 8 interceptions! This number has actually helped him secure a franchise record. The passing yards number has put him ahead of Jeff Garcia, who set the record with 4,278 in 2000. His touchdown number is also the third-most by a 49er.
He is currently at the top of the league in terms of QBR. But his name in the MVP conversation has surfaced only recently. Richard Sherman said that it was because of his draft pick order. And that if he was a top pick, “he would already be a face of the league” and an MVP candidate much sooner. But will all of this help him secure the title?

Sports commentator Chris Broussard said that the numbers are firmly in favor of Purdy. He is already the leader in QBR this season, but his number is up there at number 8 in the league’s entire history. His yards per attempt at 9.6 is the highest since 1956. The 24-year-old is also the fourth-most accurate passer in the league right now.

No doubt other QBs have also had stellar seasons. But Purdy’s contribution to his team has been more than the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, and Josh Allen. Going from last pick to MVP contender in just 2 seasons sounds like the plot of a Hollywood movie, but here we are! Maybe it’s too soon to say this, but could he be the next Tom Brady?
