NFL teams seem to be in a race to hire young head coaches. We saw that when the New England Patriots promoted Jerod Mayo as their new head coach after parting ways with Bill Belichick. Is the same thing in store for the Washington Commanders, who ended their season with a dismal 4-13 record? Well, their hopes are crumbling as Mike Macdonald decided to join hands with the Seattle Seahawks after they removed Pete Carroll.
The Commanders are the only team with a head coach opening, and it seems few people are willing to join the franchise. It all started when Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson declined the offer despite being at the top of Washington’s wish list. Waiting around for the right moment became a bane for the Commanders.
How the Washington Commanders missed on Mike Macdonald

To get their hands around Baltimore Ravens DC Macdonald, the Commanders waited for the playoff games with the Lions and the Ravens. Unfortunately for them, Macdonald decided to join the Seattle Seahawks as their new head coach, leaving the Washington team high and dry. They had a couple of in-person interviews with Macdonald and the Associate head coach, Anthony Weaver. The team was pursuing Macdonald probably because he is the youngest head coach in the league now, and with his presence, the Ravens had one of the best defensive seasons this year.

Another reason for pursuing Macdonald may be the Ravens leading the league with 60 sacks and 31 picks this season. Also, they limited their opponents to a league-low of 16.5 points. We saw it in the game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Despite the Ravens losing, they held the Chiefs to 17 points. But now that ship has sailed for the Commanders, and so has the chance with the Lions OC Ben Johnson, who is inclined to stay with the Lions to take care of unfinished business after coming so close to the Super Bowl LVIII.
They are now the only team in the league without an HC and are quickly running out of options. With a limited number of candidates on the radar, who would the Commanders hire?
The Commanders are looking into these names
For now, the Commanders are only left with a handful of choices. People like the Lions DC Aaron Glenn, the Ravens’ Associate Coach Anthony Weaver, the Cowboys’ DC Dan Quinn, and their own OC, Eric Bieniemy, backed out from the offer for unclear reasons.

They have interviewed some of these people and are preparing to interview the remaining ones. Adam Schefter’s report on X gives more clarity about their current situation. By the looks of it, the Commanders have a handful of choices, or they’ve already lost in the HC race.
