Last season, one name captivated almost everyone. Once called Mr. Irrelevant, this person completely changed his title when he led his team to the Super Bowl finals. Although his team didn’t win, he still managed to secure a place in many hearts — that’s Brock Purdy.
Now, the San Francisco 49ers are looking to resolve last season’s mistakes. However, as per broadcaster Mike Florio, there is one other thing they have to solve immediately, and that’s Brock Purdy’s contract.
In a recent episode of The Rich Eisen Show, Florio discussed Brock Purdy and CJ Stroud’s contract scenes with their respective teams. He mentioned that according to the NFL’s CBA, teams can negotiate new deals with players once the regular season ends, and not after the postseason. The analyst suggested that the 49ers could prepare a contract for Purdy right when the regular season ends, assuming they make the playoffs. This strategy would help avoid injury risks that could arise during the playoffs, like the elbow injury Purdy suffered in the NFC championship.

By locking a deal early, the 49ers can secure Purdy at a potentially lower cost. Florio explained, “…..lock him in at a number in that window between end of the regular season and start of the postseason because Rich the one thing that teams I hope have learned this year it never gets cheaper. So the moment the window slides open, that’s when the 49ers should sign Purdy, and then next year that’s when the Texans should be ready to sign Stroud. You get a great quarterback, you sign him the first day he’s eligible.”
Brock Purdy is under his rookie contract for two more seasons with a base salary of $985,000 in 2024. Although the quarterback isn’t focused about the massive payday coming his way, there are reports that he might end up getting a huge contract. Plus, Florio’s comments aren’t the full story, as the 49ers might eventually face a huge price tag for their QB.

How much Brock Purdy is likely to earn?
Currently, the going rate for a talented young quarterback is about $55 million per season, as evidenced by Trevor Lawrence’s recent contract extension with the Jaguars. Given Purdy’s performance, he is expected to be worth even more next year, assuming he stays healthy. Several quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa, Dak Prescott, and Jordan Love are expected to sign extensions soon, likely exceeding $55 million per season.
This means Purdy’s value could reach around $65 million per season by next year. However, the 49ers can’t extend Purdy’s contract yet due to the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, which requires a player to be in the league for three seasons before signing an extension.

This delay will benefit Purdy, as his market value will likely increase, but it’s not advantageous for the 49ers, who would prefer to lock him in at a lower rate sooner.
