Are NFL refs ruining the game with too many flags, or is it just part of the sport?

Better call the Week 4 game of the Dallas Cowboys vs New York Giants, a flag day! During the Thursday night game, the matchup was interrupted so many times by plenty of flags that it looked more like a parade than a football game. And that’s why the annoyed sports commentator, Al Michaels, couldn’t help but joke about it, comparing the field to Flag Day.

During the game, Michaels once said, “We’ve got another flag. You have two more flags in the backfield. No more laundry left.” Hilarious, but seems frustrating! However, the frustration wasn’t only seen in the commentator’s speech, it was also clearly visible in Cowboys’ rookie, Tyler Guyton’s candid remarks.

Tyler Guyton pointed out at the league?

After finishing off the game on September 26, the Cowboys players, including Tyler Guyton, were exiting the field through the tunnel. As obvious, the media swamped them to take their pictures. But Guyton, who appeared frustrated and confused, looked at the media for some time, probably thinking he should say it or not. However, mustering up the courage, he finally decided to speak up against the NFL and their referees’ issues. Guyton walked off by saying, “THE NFL NEEDS BETTER REFS! PLEASE!

This came after the AT&T Stadium turned into a confetti parade as the referee Clay Martin was slammed for “too many flags” on social media. Some fans even got furious, pointing out that he had never officiated a Cowboys loss. And hence, that stat raised many eyebrows.

Even NFL analyst Warren Sharp took to Twitter, revealing that Martin had been in charge of five Cowboys road games since 2018. And guess what? Dallas won them all. Hence, it made fans wonder if there was something deeper at play. Nevertheless, nothing has been made public as of now. But let’s not forget that despite these allegations, the Cowboys too were frustrated with the calls. And it was probably because this time, Dallas has been penalized more than New York in the game. Despite that, the Cowboys took the win against the Giants 20-15.

The game was filled with officiating errors that left fans frustrated. It all started with a play from Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. As he scrambled for extra yards, tight end Daniel Bellinger was called for a facemask penalty. But what was the problem? Well, Bellinger was actually the one being grabbed. And thus, it made the call puzzling.

Then came the Cowboys’ first touchdown, where RB Rico Dowdle seemed to waltz into the end zone without a defender in sight. But when you look closely, it was revealed that Cowboys TE Jake Ferguson had held a Giants player during the play. Hence, the flag was thrown. Nevertheless, it was quickly picked up, allowing the touchdown to stand.

Then again, this penalty happened when wide receiver CeeDee Lamb scored a 55-yard touchdown. He added a bit of flair by backpedaling into the end zone and tossing the ball towards Giants defender Deonte Banks. But the officials interpreted this. They called it unsportsmanlike conduct. And thus, Lamb was penalized. But the story didn’t end here! There are more flagged moments in the Thursday night horror.

As the game progressed, a potential fumble by Giants running back Devin Singletary was ruled dead. However, the replays suggested that the ball might have come loose before he was down. But the referees opted to rule it dead. So, overall, what’s the penalty score for the day?

Well, by halftime, via Sporting News, “a total of 12 penalties had been accepted (and several more called and declined). Nine were committed by the Cowboys and three by the Giants. The final tally saw Dallas penalized 11 times for 89 yards and New York got flagged four times for 35 yards.” With this, it probably feels that this game might have been one of the most NFL-flagged games.
