Is Mike McCarthy's coaching the real issue, or are the Cowboys just cursed with bad luck?

Some people say the NFL is rigged. But you know what isn’t? The AT&T Stadium. That piece of metal falling was sure as heck a sign of things going bad tonight. The Dallas Cowboys embarrassed themselves during the Monday Night Football game. Also, Mike McCarthy worsened it by seeming to give up on coaching the $9 billion team.

This is America’s team we’re talking about here folks. It’s needless to say all eyes are on them. Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson closely followed the game, but the 34-10 loss worsened it for them. Unc had some interesting takeaways from the game, and he didn’t hesitate to air them in the latest installment of Nightcap.

It’s just been two games since Cooper Rush started in lieu of Dak Prescott and he’s been horrible. He’s nothing like the QB who replaced Prescott back in 2020 when the $240 million QB fractured his ankle. In both games Rush has started, the Cowboys have lost with at least a two-score lead. Rush attempted 55 passes tonight, completing only 32, as defenders blocked many or he missed the target. And 5 sacks? The O-Line has got to be horrible.

There was a moment in the game when all the linemen fell and genuinely looked like a Tom and Jerry moment. That’s not all, the team lost Jake Ferguson to concussion, Markquese Bell dislocated his shoulder and there were also complications with Zack Martin and Tyler Smith. The mind begs the question of why didn’t the Cowboys give Trey Lance a shot. And that’s exactly what Unc was concerned about.

“But the Cowboys, look, at this point in time, Ocho, I would just play Trey Lance because what are you hoping for? Try to get the worst pick you can possibly pick. It’s time to rebuild. Your offensive line is trash. From left to right, it’s all of them,” Sharpe said on the episode of Nightcap that aired after the game.

Have an interesting take?

Jerry Jones has said on multiple occasions that he likes Trey Lance but his love for the QB didn’t translate when it mattered the most. Lance has started only 1 game as a Dallas Cowboy and has played only 9 games in his 3-year NFL career. Why not try to develop him? Some of it certainly falls on coaching and Mike McCarthy regrets his decision of not to use Lance.

Mike McCarthy breaks silence after an eyesore loss

What’s the loss in putting Trey Lance in? At this point, there isn’t. The Cowboys have already finished their season, so you might as well take Lance on a joyride. However, injuries beat up the Cowboys so badly that Dallas’ head coach didn’t even consider playing Lance. Check out what he said in the postgame presser.

“I think the one thing I should have done at the end [that] I didn’t do was I put Trey in there. I could have gotten him a series. That’s one thing that I was second-guessing myself on. But other than that, we got guys going down. There’s a number of guys went down the game and you just got to keep playing,” McCarthy said after the game.

Now we know how Skip Bayless feels watching the Cowboys lose the day in and day out. At this point, all they can focus on is rebuilding, fixing their O-Line, developing Trey Lance, and focusing on the next season. But things are never simple when it comes to the Cowboys. Trey Lance might not be on the franchise in the next season because Jones hasn’t given him an extension. Another talent mishandled at the hands of a legacy team.
