Could Daniel Jones be the missing piece for the Cowboys to turn their season around?

Seeing himself sacked to the bench after six years of service was just too much for Daniel Jones to handle. Although there were rumors of him leaving after being benched ahead of the Bucs, clash this Sunday. Giants President John Mara decided to release a statement to announce the mutual departure of Daniel Jones today.

On a post shared by the official X handle of the Giants, Mara said, “Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team.” Well, Mara also went on to praise Jones for his commitment over the years, “Daniel has been a great representative of our organization, first class in every way. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We are all disappointed in how things have worked out. We hold Daniel in high regard and have a great appreciation for him. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Now that his chapter in New York has come to an end. There are already suggestions for his next franchise in the NFL. So former NFL QB Robert Griffin III has a wild idea as he took to his X to post, “The Dallas Cowboys have an opportunity to do the funniest thing with Daniel Jones 🤌🏾” Although it seems like a far-fetched idea, it could be a real possibility. As per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, if Jones manages to clear the waivers, which he is expected to do so. Then, he would be declared a free agent and could sign with any franchise in the coming days.

Even fans are echoing the sentiment of Jerry Jones bringing Daniel Jones before the Giants’ face-off against the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, “I don’t ask for much, universe. But this one is a big one. Cowboys QB Daniel Jones v. the Giants on Thanksgiving. PLEASE.” Well, there was another person in the comments of Robert’s post who wanted the same, “That Thanksgiving matchup would be a ratings smash if they did.”

Well, Jerry should at least think about this possible move, as their starting QB, Dak Prescott, is out for the season. And in his absence, Cooper Rush has completed 566 passing yards, two TDs and two interceptions. Surely, Jones would be an upgrade on Rush, who ain’t taking the Cowboys anywhere this season. But the situation is in Jerry Jones’ hands right now. And it would be his final decision on whether he decides to bring Daniel Jones in to reignite the Cowboys’ season in a last-ditch effort. With Jones leaving his post in New York, the Giants receive massive cap hits for the next two seasons.

New York Giants’ financial situation after Daniel Jones’ departure

What’s your perspective on:

Could Daniel Jones be the missing piece for the Cowboys to turn their season around?

Have an interesting take?

Apart from his poor starting record (3-13) since signing the $160M contract extension in 2022. Jones didn’t do anything to win over the heart of the Giants management. Even this season, he went 2-8 as a starter while completing 63.3% of his passes for 2,070 yards. His eight TDs and seven interceptions are nowhere near the numbers the G-Men were expecting from their signal-caller.

Although the Giants’ general manager Joe Schoen could deem Jones’ benching as a pure “football decision.” There was more to it than just football, as they wanted to protect themselves from paying the $23M injury guarantee on his contract. They didn’t want to take any risk and decided to move him down the QB depth chart. With the immediate release of Jones from his contract, the Giants are taking a dead cap hit of $47.1M in 2024. And in 2025, they are set to take a further $22.1M cap hit. However, on the bright side, they are freeing up $19.4M in cap space.

With Daniel Jones set to test free agency, the Cowboys could be hovering on his signature. No matter how bad his tenure was in the end in New York, Jones remains a veteran in the NFL. And could rediscover his mojo, given the right players and coaching staff around him.
