Is Brock Purdy truly the future of the 49ers, or just another overhyped quarterback?

Will the 49ers give Brock Purdy another contract? Everyone has this question on their minds. And most people understand that the team will not let a talented QB go just like that. But how much can the team offer him? If we look at some of the rumors, the man may receive a large raise. However, other experts in the industry believe Purdy will be overvalued after getting this raise.

Well, that is correct as NFL legend Mark Schlereth thinks this way. In an episode of Stinkin’ Truth Podcast, the man remarked that Purdy wasn’t very good. Schlereth believes that the quarterback lacks leadership qualities and hence needs some improvement on the field. He stated, “Purdy although he has been good, he hasn’t elevated that team the way you think a big-time QB is going to elevate the team.”

The former Guard even indicated that the team might reconsider the number they want to provide the quarterback. He believes Brock Purdy has the potential to land a contract like Geno Smith’s. In this way, he will receive a significant rise, but only to the extent that he merits. But wait. What if the quarterback demanded something bigger?

In that instance, Mark Schlereth has advised that the team clearly say no. The team should not offer the quarterback a large contract like Dak Prescott’s, as it would overvalue him. The legend explained on The Stinkin Truth Podcast with Mark Schlereth, “If you are gonna say hey man, we are going to get you a $35 million a year Geno Smith deal. Then yeah, we are paying you that, but we ain’t going to the Dak Prescott $60 million, $55 million deal that ain’t gonna happen”

Well, the quarterback’s contract expires in 2025, so the 49ers must decide what to do. Purdy has a lot of talent, but circumstances are not favoring him. One such circumstance is that his own head coach is unhappy with him.

Kyle Shanahan says Brock Purdy has not made progress

As upsetting as that is to hear, it is accurate. Kyle Shanahan appeared in front of the media after the practice session on November 20, 2024. The man was asked in the appearance about how the 49ers are preparing for practice following five wins and five losses. The HC began to discuss everything and expressed his dissatisfaction with his quarterback.

The HC stated, “It’s hard to make a lot of progress after the way he played last year. I think Brock’s playing at the exact same level.” Even if a player performs the best in history, he still needs to progress. And when a head coach says these things about his own quarterback, something is definitely suspicious. When we look at this comment in context, it appears like the head coach probably wants more from his quarterback.

Well, nobody knows the reality of the locker room, but if the quarterback wants a large contract next season, he needs to prove it. His stats this season (66% completion rate for 2,613 yards) aren’t too bad. Given that the quarterback has 13 touchdowns, it is clear that he can surely improve more.

It will be intriguing to see if the 49ers can truly capitalize on this potential. Or the quarterback departs the team after not receiving what he wants. Only time will tell what is going to happen.
