Which coach comes to your mind when we talk about the greatest defense in the NFL 2024 season? Undoubtedly, the Eagles’ defense outperformed every single team in the NFL. It was led by none other than the DC, Vic Fangio. It was so top-notch in the Super Bowl also that it broke Patrick Mahomes’ rhythm, which was unbelievable. And there is mainly one person behind it.
Patrick Mahomes and Co. were shattered after the Eagles’ crazy start. That is why everyone is applauding Fangio and NFL legend Mark Schlereth is no exception. But while praising the Eagles’ defensive coordinator, Schlereth just knocked out the Miami team for losing this genius in 2023. The three-time Super Bowl champion said, “I tell you, they’ve been exceptionally well coached. Here’s the other thing that was interesting in Miami like how two teams are built differently. In Philadelphia, it’s all about the defensive and offensive lines, right? It’s all about controlling the line of scrimmage in Philadelphia. Where do you spend all your assets.” Mark Schlereth was at the Rich Eisen Show.
Schlereth continued his take, “Speaking of Miami, didn’t Vic Fango get dumped by Miami because you know he’s too old and he doesn’t relate to today’s younger player? Maybe he just doesn’t relate to guys who don’t want to be great football players!” Schlereth just delivered a slap to the Miami Dolphins.

He further continued, “He doesn’t relate to guys that you know. Want to go down to South Beach because it looked like he related to those defensive players and those young defensive players the Philadelphia Eagles. DeJean was taking one of the houses and Mitchell was playing his ass off. So, I don’t know maybe it’s the the area of the country that you play in.” But wait, do you know when the Miami Dolphins won their last Super Bowl? It was in 1973. Man, that’s over 50 years!
To get back to talk about Vic Fangio, it’s the Dolphins‘ loss. The 66-year-old coach has been the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014. And also worked as the DC for the Chicago Bears (2015-18) before taking charge of the Denver Broncos head coach position. He was a consultant to the Philadelphia Eagles and served as the Miami Dolphins DC before returning to Philadelphia in 2024.
But wait… do you know what Vic Fangio said about the Eagles’ defense in the Super Bowl LIX? Let’s learn it quickly!
The Eagles’ defense surpassed Vic Fangio’s expectations
Vic Fangio was impressed by Cooper DeJean‘s pick-six. When asked about him, he collectively said, “He’s so good against pressure. I was hoping we could play the game without having to pressure much, and that happened.” Patrick Mahomes was sacked a staggering 6 times, which has made football fans finally believe he is a mortal.

Fangio also added, “They exceeded my hopes and expectations. But I did believe we could have a good pass rush game.” They harassed Patrick Mahomes so much that he had arguably the worst game of his career, on the biggest stage of them all. In addition to giving up his personal sacks record, he threw three interceptions. It was a complete disaster class by the QB, exemplified by a miserable stretch of four consecutive snaps late in the second quarter. The stretch saw a pick-six, a sack for a 7-yard loss, and another interception deep in their own territory to leave them rotting 0-24 at halftime. After the game, Eagles defensive lineman Josh Sweat said with a smile, “Three big plays in a row. That’s when I was like, ‘Oh. It’s just that day.'”

Alright. Vic Fangio’s team has done the unthinkable. There was narrow space to bet against the Chiefs but Jalen Hurts and Co made it possible. The result? The flock of Eagles returned to Philadelphia with a beauty – the Lombardi. Super Bowl LVII avenged. Regrets turned into sweet memories for a lifetime. The Dolphins keep on waiting.
