“Obviously, we’re all very disappointed with where we are right now.” New York Giants owner John Mara is not one to shy away from accepting his team’s shortcomings. But accepting mistakes and changing things to rectify them are two different things. So, when Mara was asked about head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen‘s future with the team, he knew exactly what to say.

“We are not making any changes this season, and I do not anticipate making any changes in the offseason either.” Mara was clear about his confidence in Head Coach Daboll. Almost. The statement, no doubt, was wrapped in uncertainty—a sentiment many might share if their team endured a disastrous season and financial struggles. Following these comments, an NFL legend couldn’t help but weigh in.

Greg Olsen recently shared his thoughts on the Dan Patrick Show on YouTube about Mara’s vote of confidence in Daboll.“If you look at the Giants—you know, I like Daboll. He did an unbelievable job in his first year, making the playoffs, and going on the road to Minnesota. I called that game, and they [the Giants] pulled off the upset win,” Olsen said.

He continued, “Since then, it’s been a disaster. You look at them, and you say, not only have they had a culture of losing, but they let Daniel Jones go. They don’t have their future quarterback on the roster, and now they have to start all over.” The Giants, who clinched a playoff spot in 2023, now sit at a dismal 2-12 win-loss record this season—one of the worst in the league. How did this happen? What are the franchise’s major weaknesses, and where do they go from here?

Brian Daboll’s Giants: A Season to Forget

The Giants are experiencing their worst season in a decade. Naturally, HC Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are facing bitter backlash for the team’s poor performance. Despite the financial challenges the franchise has been dealing with this year, Daboll and Schoen arguably could have taken more action.

Sure, the HC led the team to the playoffs in his first year, but the shameful and continuous losses have frustrated fans. And it’s not just the head coach and GM facing criticism—the owner is, too. Do you remember the plane that flew over before the Giants’ game against the Saints? The billboard it carried read, “MR. MARA ENOUGH–PLZ FIX THIS DUMPSTER FIRE.” But what’s going wrong with the team?

The main issue plaguing the Giants this season has been their quarterback situation. Daniel Jones started the season but injured himself midway through, and he delivered underwhelming stats even before the injury. Perhaps that’s why Mara does not offer any promises regarding Jones. When questioned about the injured quarterback’s remarks, Mara simply stated, “I’m not going to get into that.” Following Jones’s injury, he was replaced by Tommy DeVito, who subsequently suffered a concussion.

DeVito achieved a solid completion percentage of 70.5% by completing 46 out of 90 attempted passes. However, this impressive performance couldn’t save the struggling Giants. The team’s confidence continued to dwindle as they faced a nine-game losing streak. After DeVito’s injury, the Giants introduced Tim Boyle as their new starting quarterback. Boyle had 50 CMP% after completing 12 out of 24 throws. Unfortunately, Boyle hasn’t managed to steady the sinking ship, and teammates like Malik Nabers seem to lack confidence in the new quarterback. When asked about Boyle, Nabers said, “It looked like he knew the offense just as a first-string quarterback should.”

Daboll appears composed despite the chaos, but as Greg Olsen suggested, starting over might be the only option. With such a poor offense, it’s hard to expect better results. A glimmer of hope for the Giants is the potential to draft star Shedeur Sanders in the April 2025 NFL Draft. Let’s see what happens on that front!
