What’s it like having bad luck and constantly being in hot water? Ask the Jets—They know exactly what that feels like. Aaron Rodgers can give you some notes too. Woody Johnson’s sole purpose in bringing the QB on board was to win a Lombardi Trophy and, if not that, at least a push into playoff contention. However, injuries ruined their big plans, and the team also went on to fire former head coach Robert Saleh. But now a former NFL player has come up with an interesting lesson from the Saleh-saga which Pete Carroll needs to pay attention to.

So, let us set the scene for you. Former Panthers TE and three-time Pro Bowler Greg Olsen hopped on ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd for the latest episode. Since many teams with new HCs held their first introductory press conferences this week, Colin decided to throw in some questions about that. And when the question is about the HCs, how can we not talk about Robert Saleh and the Jets? Talking about that, Olsen connected it to Pete Carroll:

“Pete is A+. He is as organized, as diligent, and as good as anybody I’ve ever been around in all of those things. I think the question that comes with a guy like Pete, you’re going to get the leadership and the experience, all that is given. I think the question you get with a hire like Pete is no different than any other defensive coach.

“And it’s no different than with Aaron Glenn. Whoever the defensive coach is, the number one question is who is your offensive coordinator and how do you figure out the quarterback position? You could be the greatest leader, you could be the greatest galvanizer, and run the best locker room. If your offense isn’t good, defensive coaches get fired. It’s kind of funny,” said Olsen. But if you think that’s all, no, it’s not.

“Look at Zac Taylor and Cincinnati or you look at offensive coaches. When their offense is really good and their defense struggles, the defensive coordinator gets replaced. When defensive coaches like Robert Salah, for example, when he got fired, they were a top-five defense in the league. It was the offense that was struggling. Aaron Rodgers wasn’t playing up to expectations. The offense was underachieving, and they fired the defensive guy.”

That is straight-up truth, no sugarcoating there. The former Panthers TE pointed out how crucial it is to have a good offense. And we all saw that the Jets didn’t have that this season. Their O-Line leader, Aaron Rodgers, threw for 3,897 yards, with 28 TDs to his name, tossing eleven interceptions along the way. But what can Pete Carroll learn from this?

Well, the Raiders fired Carroll as their new HC, and Salah’s incident can teach him something. “You look at some of the really longtime really good defensive coaches, they’re able to weather the storm of the ups and downs of being on the defensive side because they have Hall of Fame quarterback. So If Pete can bring in bring in a young Russ, you know Russell Wilson, and he can figure it out as quickly as he did in Seattle, he is a home run,” said Olsen.

What’s your perspective on:

Are the Jets doomed to repeat history, or can Aaron Rodgers finally lead them to glory?

Pete Carroll to the Raiders’ rescue?

Former Seahawks HC Pete Carroll is making his return as the head coach with the Raiders. After parting ways with Antonio Pierce, the Raiders will now head into next season with Pete. At 73, he’s the oldest HC in the league, but don’t let that fool you. As Carroll said during his introductory press conference, “I’m a skilled athlete, man. I don’t do the 70s… I’m just going to do it the way I know how to do it and kick a– in every aspect of it. If we’re fortunate enough to do it.

The Raiders look like they will come back with full force next season. Greg Olsen, who also got the chance to play under Pete Carroll right before he retired, feels Carroll will need to pay attention to the offense, despite him having a defensive approach.

But let us not forget that the coach is anything but new to the job. He has got both college and NFL coaching experience on his resume. He led the Seattle Seahawks as a head coach for 13 long years and now, after a short one-season break, he is back at what he does best.

Carroll is all in on taking the Raiders right back into the competition. During his introductory conference, the HC made it clear that he would not be wasting time on rebuilding the team. “It took us a few years to get to the very top of the last couple of programs I was with. We’re starting right now, and going forward immediately.”

The work isn’t done for the Raiders, though. They still have to figure out their QB situation. Most likely, Carroll will be looking for a new QB instead of rolling with Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew. And if he does bring in a new QB, Greg believes the Raiders could quickly reignite their spark.

Rumors suggest the new HC could bring in Russell Wilson. If that does happen, it will be interesting to see how they perform in the coming season. What do you think?
