Last week was devastating for Kansas City Chiefs fans. The leaders of AFC West lost to the team sitting at the bottom of the same division. The Chiefs also broke the 16-game consecutive winning streak over the Broncos. And after the 24-9 game, they also recorded their first single-digit score of the season and their only game so far with 0 touchdowns. It seemed like the Broncos were having a field day, dominating the Chiefs at every play.
Now the Chiefs are going to take on the Miami Dolphins in Germany. It is the same team that obliterated the Broncos 70-20 in Week 3. But the Chiefs are no Denver Broncos. They are the reigning Super Bowl champions. That’s why the Dolphins have come up with a master plan to exploit the chinks in the Chiefs’ armor.
Chiefs’ weaknesses that the Dolphins could take advantage of?
The Chiefs offense is at its lowest. It is currently ranked 12th in the entire league, while every year since Mahomes joined them, they were sixth or better. Last year, the Chiefs averaged 29.2 points per game, while this year they are around 23.4. One of the major holes in the Chiefs offense that the Dolphins could exploit is their wideout game.
Rashee Rice is currently the Chiefs’ leading WR. He has recorded 361 yards and 3 TDs on 30 receptions. But he’s also pacing the corps in drops with five. While the Kelce-Mahomes partnership continues to shine, on the occasions in which #87 is covered, Mahomes is yet to find a reliable second target. Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney, and Skyy Moore all have reached just 20 catches near the midway point of this season.
The Chiefs had recently signed Mecole Hardman, their former teammate, over from the New York Jets. While he clearly has been doing better in his former team, than with the Jets, he is yet to achieve anything remarkable. Compared with this, the Dolphins have Tyreek Hill, a former Chiefs member himself. He has emerged as a favorite of Tua and has recorded 1,000+ yards in just the first six games, whereas he recorded 1,000+ in an entire season under Mahomes. So, are we heading towards a Dolphins victory?
Will the Dolphins’ offense wreak havoc on the Chiefs in Germany?
The Dolphins offense is setting stats tables on fire. They have totaled 3,626 yards, which is the most in the franchise’s history. They lead the NFL in nearly every category: Total Offense (453.3), Passing Offense (301.5), Scoring Offense (33.9), Rushing Offense (151.8), Yards Per Rush (5.9), Yards Per Play (7.3), Net Yards Per Pass Attempt (8.7), and Explosive Plays of 25+ Yards (28). Phew! The Chiefs are up against a formidable team.
The Dolphins QB, Tua Tagovailoa, leads the NFL in passing yards with 2,416 and is tied for the most number of TD passes with Kirk Cousins at 18. Besides, they have offensive weapons like Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill who have recorded 121 yards and 7 receptions and 112 yards on 8 receptions, respectively.
While the Chiefs are somewhat at their historical lowest, the Dolphins are the opposite. They are 6-2 for the first time since 2001 and are looking to make it 7-2, by handing the Chiefs their second consecutive defeat. Will the Dolphins manage to crack the Chiefs code or will the Chiefs ultimately triumph?
