Coming back from an Achilles injury that ended his first season in New York prematurely, Aaron Rodgers was supposed to be the savior of Jets Nation as they looked to end their 13-year playoff hiatus. Now, after 10 weeks of NFL action, the Jets are almost certain to miss out on the playoffs once again. As Rodgers’ chapter in green and white could be over before it even truly began.
Well, the four-time NFL MVP hasn’t really done anything extraordinary that was expected of him. Completing just 62.4% of his passes for 2,258 yards, Rodgers has thrown just 15 TDs with seven interceptions. Helping the Jets win only 3 games out of 10 this season, Rodgers boasts a QBR of 52.0. Finding himself ranked 24th out of 32 qualified signal-callers in the NFL this season, Rodgers’ time in Jets colors could be numbered.
As per The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, “There is no guarantee Aaron Rodgers will be back in a Jets uniform in 2025.” If it does come true, the Jets may have truly given up on Rodgers’ inability to turn around their fortunes. Still on a contract that runs until 2025, the Jets would have to take a cap hit of $23.5 million if they decide to let him go. With a $2.5M base salary and $35M option bonus for next season, the Jets wouldn’t really mind letting him move.

Seeing the Jets’ possible stance on Rodgers, it doesn’t really match with his ambitions. Last season, when he was asked about his plans for the future, Rodgers expressed, “Two or three or four more years.” Even this season, when the Jets are fighting against the clock to turn their results around. A-Rod hasn’t really made a U-turn on his feelings, “Not really, not for the negative. Not really no.” Battling through hamstring and ankle issues this season, the Jets QB hasn’t missed any snaps going into week 11.

But the constant changes that are occurring around Florham Park could also witness Rodgers getting replaced. Well, the Jets may have already sidelined their veteran QB as they seemingly ignore his stance on coaching change.

Since firing Robert Saleh, the Jets thought they could get an instant boost with fresh plans being implemented in New York. However, the man who was promoted to interim head coach, Jeff Ulbrich, is 1-4 himself. Although it doesn’t look like Ulbrich will be offered the coaching position by the end of this season. Rodgers has seemingly expressed his interest in continuing to play under him as long as he is there, “I feel like he’s done some really good things. I think Brick is an NFL head coach, whether it’s here moving forward or down the line. I mean, he’s a leader of men and I’ll stand by him. I’d love to play for him until the end. So have a lot of love and respect for him.”

However, the Jets may be interested in bringing current Chiefs OC Matt Nagy to the helm. As per CBS sports insider Jonathan Jones, “[Nagy] should be in the mix for a head coach job this upcoming cycle.” And with the Jets looking to fill their spot, he remains a viable target. Well, the only concern is his tenure as Bears head coach, where he made the playoffs just twice in four seasons. After getting fired in 2021, Nagy took up the role of Chiefs offensive coordinator.
Helping Andy Reid set up the Chiefs offense, the reigning Super Bowl Champion head coach had some strong praises for Nagy, “He does everything. He sets up the offense. He coordinates the offense is what he does. And he’s so creative. I knew that when he was a quarterbacks coach. I saw it when he was a coordinator, and then you saw it in Chicago as their head coach.” As Nagy remains a hot prospect heading to next season, will he manage to sort out the Jets mess if he does join? Well, we might have to wait for that answer as the Jets try to salvage their season with a veteran QB who doesn’t have that flair left in him.
